I have a e 36 m3 evo 4dr, it truly has been a great car and still is a great car, yes it gos wrong, yes the vanos is going, and now its no worth more than 6k. Have had the car for two years and maybe just maybe might think about changing for the e 46 but one big problem they start at 15k and thats for a 100k car. Seems a lot of cash for what is not much different than the old one and has similar miles to my own. yes i know you are now going to say i am mad, but they have a similar enginge, and i am sure they have similar problems.

So having owned mine and got to know its up keep habits having sorted the car i am sure its good for a few more years do i keep it, or get a newer model, take on and sort out her baggage and let her go again i a few years walking off with half or more than her orginal purchase price if you get my meaning.

What would you do, I stil really like my evo its just shes starting to look old and by that i mean the styling her body work is great.

Anthony

ps wife thinks we should keep the one we got. what till she wants some shoes.

Have the vanos repairs done properly, re-do the suspension and just enjoy the car. Why waste money on something newer which will only fall in price when for much less you can continue to enjoy what you already have.

You say that the E46 M3 is basically the same as an E36 - I beg to differ!

I own an E36 M3 Evo too and have recently test drove the E46 and it was NOTHING like the E36 to drive - in fact it couldnt be more different if it tried!!! Power delivery is different (much smoother pick up than the E36), the gearchange, brakes and throttle all felt different too.

Dont forget your current M3 is a 4 door (so a bit more practical) and the E46 will be a Coupe.

what they said^^^^^^^ i am in the same boat as you! not willing to spend more money on a car with same milage that may have niggles ahead, my evo's niggles i know about and have mostly sorted. Keep the evo loon mate (they look hard as nails and are pretty rare), spend some money on her, and you will fall in love again.

can we have a piccie?

^^^^^and what he also said.^^^^^^

Trust me you will fall in love again. Took mine on a little jaunt to the Nurburgring a couple of weeks back with some friends from PH with TVR Cerbera's and i've fallen in love with it all over again. Was tempted to sell it and buy a Cerb but after that and also doing the Furball5000 in July i don't think i could ever part with it now.....it's a keeper for sure.

Car depreciation is a tough nut to crack, but few cars lose less than 35% over three years if driven around 10,000 or less a year and looked after by a dealer. After three years it can be a lottery, depending upon useage, service history, care of ownership etc. You will lose more money on trading up than you will on improving your e36 and have higher running costs! Its your hard earned cash and I would not trade up yet unless you have money to burn!
