Anyone own an M5 on here?.
Discussion
My brother has an E60 M5 which I drive frequently, 6k miles of cold starts and in and out of town driving averaged consumption of 13.3mpg. My E39 M5 doing similar mileage plus the occasional long motorway run has averaged 18mpg over 12k miles. In short the mpg isn't a problem (frugal in comparison to a Range Rover or a Bentley!) as the car is just so dman good when booting it, however having the standard 5 series fuel tank in the M5 is nothing short of a design flaw, and is the only thing stopping me definitely replacing my E39 with an E60.
(As a note a few people have mentioned in the past on here, that the E60 M5 can do 300 motorway miles on a tank of fuel whilst flowing with traffic as opposed to Hooning it)

Thanks I do live out of town which should make a difference
I have had two E39 M5's for a total of 90k miles. Did a lot of local runs but quite a few long distance hikes and both cars returned near identical 18 mpg over the time I had them. On the motorway, cruising at around 95-100 mph (only in germany of course!) would retun around 22-23mpg.
Similar figures for my E60 are 12.9mpg over 7k miles so far, but at similar cruising speeds on the motorway, only manages 15.8mpg and I find that a major problem as it means starting to think about looking for petrol after 150 or so miles on a long journey. Otherwise however, the car is brilliant!

Sold my E60 M5 in February after owning it for about 9 fabulous months.
Fuel consumption was low teens as an average & as high as 20 if cruising on the motorway, however got as low as 5MPH when hooning round Spa (awesome memories).
The problem with the car is not so much the consumption as the size of the tank. BMW to retain weight balance etc. fitted the M5 with the same sized tank as the 520i which means it's 150-200miles between fill ups. This is a real pain in the arse as you're forever filling up, that said you only do £50 fills which is far better than say the RS6 or A8 where £80+ was normal.
