do bmw carry out this 'enhancement' as a matter ofd course when the car is serviced or only if the problem develops?

The crankshaft bearing shell issue? This was a recall, so all cars should have had the work done, and in most cases was done immediately.

not sure if it is the crank shaft issue, actually. Read an article in Evo a year or so ago stating that the early e46 m3s should in fact all have been recalled, but that BMW had estimated the cost to be too high, so instead offered what they termed 'engine enhancement', which I'm told is in fact just about correcting the problem that should have been taken care of by a recall.

I think its just BMW's way of describing a recall (as 'Engine Enhancment) to cover up their problem

There shouldn't be many cars out there that still require it.
