BMW reveals the sharper new M3

More powerful - but is it any quicker?

BMW unveiled the new M3 at the Geneva show -- and details about Munich's new bahn-stormer are starting to emerge.

It's powered by a V8 engine, based on the V10 from the BMW M5 / M6, with about 400 hp -- or maybe more. That much we know.

Autocar this week adds more information, including the fact that the motor will drive through an optional seven-speed sequential manual gearbox -- to the rear wheels of course -- and that weight will be shed via the deployment of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic panels and aluminium suspension components.

Despite that, it's likely to weigh more than its predecessor at around 1,600Kg. However, the extra beef makes up for it, so performance is expected to remain pretty much on par at 4.9 seconds for the dash to 62mph and an electronically limited 155mph Vmax.

In terms of design, there are three large air intakes below the cooling grille that supply the engine with additional intake and cooling air while the aluminium bonnet sports a power bulge and air vents.

A new front spoiler and bumper design mean the vehicle is longer than the standard 3 Series and the flared front wheel arches just contain the forged 19-inch Y-spoke design light alloy rims pushed out to a wider track.

The gills behind the wheel arch act as outlets for hot air from the engine, and accompany the deeper side skirts, and the new mirrors are designed to minimise drag. The rear includes a spoiler lip on the boot lid that adds downforce while a diffuser helps keep things on the ground. It's flanked by the classic quad tailpipes.

Eventually the model line-up will include a tin-top, a hardtop cabriolet and a Touring.

The price of the base model's likely to be around £46,000 -- before you start ticking boxes on that long, long options list.

Why do they call it a "sequential manual gearbox"?

Surely a manual gearbox is one which isn't automated, i.e. in which you operate the clutch.

AFAIK only BECs and Ultima-types have a proper "sequential manual gearbox".

I think what they're getting at is that it's a sequential gearbox that you flip the paddles manually with...

Anyway, I think that it's really bad when you prefer the look of the older model when anyone brings out a new car...sorry BMW!

Well I imagine its a robotised manual box that can only go through the gears sequentially, so does justify its name even if it is different to a proper sequential box like the ones you mentioned.

My sources tell me there is no SMG gearbox. Just a proper manual. Maybe a double-clutch system some time later.

1600kg.........holy cow

I like the bit about the ali. suspension componenets. Let me guess, ali control arms.....like the ones on the e30 M3 made 15+ years ago. They are not even trying anymore, pathetic.

Love it. Not sure about the bonnet or the price tag mind you! But i think it looks great. In the flesh i'd imagine it'll be even better and know doubt it'll be the best car in it's class.

Yeh, must be a piece of cake to be consistently best in class.

Not convinved by this, pretty bland I reckon. I think it's just become too mainstream a model for anything out of the ordinary to be risked.

Gorgeous alloys, but the power bulge is trying too hard.

Somehow I reckon that is down to Brussels pedestrian regulations - clearance under the bonnet, rather than BMW doing it for the hell of it?

Isn't it the top of the V8?

I'd rather have a Audi RS5 (wich they'll surely do!!). But both of them are rather boring. They sure are great, great driving machines, but other wise they are boring. I'd rather have a 3 year old V8 Vantage (by the time the beamer and the RS5 will be out, a 3 year old Vantage is about the same to buy (not to run, I know)). Not as fast, but a million times more special!!!!!

Bet the alloys get changed for production.

Can't see them launching it with the wheels from the out going model fitted.

1600 kg!! so a lighter 1400 kg csl at some point will demand a big premium for what the car should have been, one thinks!

So by the time you add kit that is doubtless standard on a RS4 your going to be looking at say £55k. 3 series are just far too common these days and even the mighty M3s of this world just dont do it for me. For that money you can buy a Sagaris and a daily transport.
