When buying a secondhand M3 (circa 2002), what should I be looking for ?

the engine update! all E46 M3 engines need that between 2001<>2003 otherwise it can cost you a lot!
Ask if it had the update(oilpump and more importand stuf) or a complete new engine!
by the way, from begin 2004 there was another update on the oilpump stronger....
