Problems with M6 ??

Can't claim to own one (as I can't find that £40k I dropped down the back of the sofa ) but I suppose the issues are:
- It's waay over-priced as new
- Brakes are not meant to be up to much
- Not much rear room
- I suppose carbon roof can be colour sensitive
- M5 & 911 exist for same money
However, apart from the above it sounds good and goes a bit and can look decent in the right colour.
You can get a recent one for £60k with some gentle negotiation, so if you don't want either of the other two then

Check out BM3W.CO.UK But the biggest problem i read about is fuel consumption. As was mentioned over there, you can overtake everything on the road except a service station.
I have also heard of a few gearbox issues with M5s so I presume M6s will also suffer. The red cog of death as it is known, appears on the dash.

Great car, and a bit of a bargain at the moment compared to new price. I wouldn't buy new obviously, but with second hand prices on a par with an M5 it has more to offer if you can live without the extra doors.
It's lighter, faster, far better spec and looks like nothing else (for better or worse), and the interior is a far nicer place to be. I know some have had issues with gearboxes, but touch wood, mine has been perfect. Only problem I had was being an arse and crashing it. As to a 997,again the M6 is faster, rarer and the interior much more special.
Fuel economy no worse than my previous X5 4.8 or an E39 M5 so don't listen to those who bang on about fuel economy!! However, what they probably mean is tank isn't huge and so range isn't great, but to be honest the choices are 1) Stand at petrol station in the rain and wind for 1/2 hour while you put £100 of fuel in, or 2) visit petrol station twice at 15 minutes a time...broad as it is long really!!

I've had mine for 6 months now (bought after someone else took the first 20K depreciation!). No problems beyond the size of the tank, but frankly that's not a big issue. Only ever seen a couple of others on the road, so has some exclusivity if you like that kind of thing. Very refined at speed in 400hp mode, a completely different beast in P500/sport mode with the suspension firmed up. Having had an E46 M3 for a couple of years, the M6 is a different car in many ways: not so edgy, a better ride and nicer environment.

What's far better about the spec in an M6 than an M5?? I think you'll find it's the reverse, as most M6's are very low spec due to the car's original list price. The M5 was/is around £64K brand new & with all the toys that rises to about £75K, doing the same math for an M6 a loaded one would be £100K new & i doubt many buyers entered the £100K zone (could be wrong but check those up for sale).

No, the M6 has many of the M5 options as standard. The main extras you could spec were (from memory) extended leather, TV function and Bluetooth. Stuff like LOGIC 7 HiFi, voice control and such like (all options on the M5) are/were standard on the M6.

You sure?? Voice, BlueTooth, Extended Leather, Adaptive Bi-Xenons, Electric Sunroof are standard on the M5. Full Leather (that's the extra £5K option for leather topped dash & doors) Logic7, M-Multi-Function seats (the active side bolsters) & TV are options on both the M5 & M6 (extended speakers are standard on M5 & M6). I'm not aware of any options on the M5 that are standard on the M6, as you lose the Sunroof etc.
I'm no expert but that's what i've seen/been told when i looked at M6's (briefly).
However the M6 is defo slightly quicker being 0.1 sec quicker to 60 due to being 100KG lighter.
I made this move, from an M3 to an M6. It's a great car, but with hindsight I might've gone for something else. I see you already have SMG in the M3, and SMG3 in the M6 is better, but it's still not foolproof (at least not for this fool ). When you're tanking it, the SMG's great, but it's very difficult (read: impossible, IMO) to be smooth around town, and the clonks & neck-jarring jumps you get in traffic are fantastically annoying (awaits post from Zod saying it's not a problem ). A reset of the SMG (coast in neutral at c30mph & pull in both paddles) makes it better but still not perfect.
As for problems, mine's been very good, although I did have the transmission problem connected to the wheel speed sensors (quite a well-known thing apparently) that's easily fixed by the dealer. Also had a problem with the TV not working at first, but a new unit under warranty fixed that.
Otherwise, it's a great car (especially on A-roads & motorways), nicely imposing without being too flash - most people just think it's another Beemer coupe, only those in the know realise it's a 500hp missile!

Full Leather (that's the extra £5K option for leather topped dash & doors) Logic7, M-Multi-Function seats (the active side bolsters) & TV are options on both the M5 & M6 (extended speakers are standard on M5 & M6). I'm not aware of any options on the M5 that are standard on the M6, as you lose the Sunroof etc.

I'm not sure about M6's being low spec either, mine certainly had full leather, alcantara roof lining/parcel shelf/Bluetooth/TV/DAB etc etc for mid 60's.
The lighter weight not only improves straight line performance but also helps with handling too, ala CSL. Apologies if you think this is a dig at the M5. Quite the contrary, if I needed 4 doors I'd have one in a heartbeat, fantastic pair of cars IMO.
It's a splendid car but I wouldn't pay £80k for a new one!

I can't comment directly on the M6 but have been driving the mechanically similar E60 M5 V10 for the last 8 months. There clearly are some problems which BMW are struggling to deal with. Mine has had four failures of different control units and sensors and the i-drive continues to lock-up or freeze which is incredibly frustrating. The warning signs which have variously appeared include "Fail safe mode", "Transmission Failure", "Tyre Sensor Failure", "EDC failure" and others. Sometimes these warnings came up and then disappeared sometimes they stayed. I am told that the central control unit was faulty but also that gearbox and steering sensors have failed. The problem is diagnosing cause and effect. At one stage the car was at the dealer for 6 weeks because the parts and/or software fixes were not available either in the UK or Germany or in the supply chain. It was fixed but then another sensor failure sent it back again. The car has been running without fault (save for the wretched i-drive problems) for three months now.
The second issue is the question of fuel consumption. My E60 is driven in M mode nearly all the time (if I wanted a 400 bhp car I'd have bought one). It returns a running average of 11.8 MPG. I also still have my E39 M5 which is now in retirement but was used for identical purposes and journeys. It averages 15.4 MPG and is driven in Sport mode all the time. I have challenged BMW on why the consumption is so dreadful - to put it in context worse than my twin supercharged Aston V600 used to be, worse than my 1987 V8 Vantage 6.3, far worse than any far heavier 4X4 we've ever owned. BMW GB came and road tested the car and claimed to have attained 17 MPG - I suggest by switching everything off and driving it as an auto or more likely still finding a steep enough and long enough hill and putting it in neutral! They actually returned it to me with the trip meter (which I'd zeroed...) showing they'd managed to get 13MPG. They say that nothing is wrong with it and that it is performing within tolerance. Clearly the official consumption figures are a complete fiction. To be fair I never expected the consumption to be anything other than poor but am surprised it is so much worse than the E39 given the advances in technology (not withstanding the power hike).
Having said all of the above the car has a great engine, gearbox, brakes and handling and were it not for the loathsome and slow i-drive interface is a pleasure to drive and own.

I did not say or mean the M6 was low spec, just that it was not higher spec than an M5 in standard form. Their may be subtle differences & i know you get a little extra on the 2006/7 cars (M5 & M6) than you did on the 2005 M5. Extended Voice & Bluetooth is standard on all M5's as is the upgraded Speaker package (Logic7 is an option on both cars i think). Full leather is defo a £5K option on an M5 & i thought the same applied on the M6, however as the M6 has a smaller cabin, perhaps it's standard on an M6. Also TV is still option only on M5's & both M6's i looked at had NO TV so i guess it was also an option on the M6.
My only point was spec for spec (options etc.) i'm almost positive their is very little difference between the 5 & the 6. I also agree that if i didn't need the rear space, a 2nd hand M6 may well have graced my garage rather than the M5.

only one M5 driver has gearbox problems.
