Are there any decent third part warranties available for these cars or is BMW's £1300 the only realistic option?
I've heard that cheaper alternatives tend to quibble everything and have unrealistic low maximum values etc
Can anyone tell me any more?

Yes, that's what I've heard BMW are charging for cars on 60k to <100k miles at the time of taking out the warranty. Cars on <60k are about half that price and BMW will not give warrantys to cars already on 100k+ miles.

Sorry I don't know about third party warranty companies.

(Do low annual mileage so haven't bothered with a warranty)

Why do you want a warranty. Serious question.

I assume your answer is vanos. If so why not buy a mid 2001 car when the vanos problems seem to have been substantively cured?
