I'm picking up an M6 in a few weeks and planning a trip to Europe later in the year when I can really use the performance.

Does anyone know if the 155mph speed limiter is a reality or just a myth. I've been told that it's possible to get over 175 showing on the clock with the car still pulling. Appreciate indicated speed will be higher that real but would not expect such a big over-read.

Basically if it really is limited I want to find out how you remove it. OR are BMW being sneaky?

Cheers

Not sure about M6's but a few standard E60 M5's have been tested at VMAX where the limiter has always come in at 164mph GPS verified, I'd assume the M6 to be similar. Also during VMAXs the chap who owns DMS took the limiter off their development M5 and had over 180mph GPS verified before needing to brake (similar speeds to 996TT X50, Gallardos etc).

Do you have any idea how the limiter can be removed/disabled?

It is a software thing. You'll need to get either BMW or one of the after market tuners to do it for you. For the sake of how often you'll get over 164mph, I'd be tempted to leave it in place until you've run in properly etc past 3k miles or even until the warranty runs out.

But chipping the car does more than remove the limiter - I've heard good things about the improved torque & 'driveability' of the DMS version.

As said, it's a software thing.

In Europe (not UK) you can opt for an E60 M5 to have the soft limiter reomoved thus raising the limiter to 181MPH (true speed) but the dealers of course charge for this. In the UK AFAIK only a re-map with limiter removal will provide you what you want. DMS are the ONLY company i would trust with my M5 & they have re-mapped both my previous 535d M-Sport & my current M5 & as Daz states, they have an E60 M5 they use for the software development (that's one of the reasons i bought my M5).

The re-map improves the mid & high range torque by a huge amount, making the car far more usable across the gear range, also of course the speed limiter is totally removed & you get a further 40 ponies to boot. Transforms the car in my opinion.

Give Mike or Rob a call at DMS & have a chat with them.

Is this purely a "chipping" modification or do they require any other modifications like exhaust, etc.
I do have a few concerns regarding WARRANTY when it comes to chipping - have you encountered any problems on that front - is it detectable during normal dealer/maintenance interactions?

BTW. sounds like a great idea

No other modifications, just a re-map of the car's Engine ECU. This is NOT detectable by BMW as since my re-map, i've had the SMG replaced under warranty, 2 services & a couple of smaller jobs done. The DMS re-map is the only aftermarket modification to my E60 M5.

Depends

Ask for Mike Cooper & say that Paul Clarkson suggested you call him. Tell him you'd like a January sale price

It might just be worth talking to Ray West at West Tuning (Thruxton)... as many others on here will verify, Ray West has been in the business of tuning BM's for years and is highly respected at what he does (not to mention a top bloke).

I had my M3 re-mapped/de-limited by Ray last year and the results were impressive... i, like you, did a lot of research before deciding to go with Ray, so i also know a lot of others that sing his praises.

Give him a call on 01264 773 839.

Hope this helps,

Craig

The limiter cuts in at 170mph but is removable, never bothered with mine as I sold her and bought a noble M400, much faster car IMO. ( and more comfortable !)

If you leave your car in 6th and don't go into 7th, limiter does not kick in. It only works in 7th gear I believe.

There was a similar myth with the CSL and keeping in in 5th until passing the limiter point and then changing into top gear.
Sadly this was just a myth and chances are the M6 is the same.

This is true with the E46 M3. No limiter in 5th.

Hi again, I think you have to leave it in the lower gear or the limiter kicks in. You have to stay in 6th or 5th in older cars.
