Want to bin the fing Alfa, always loved the M5 in all its incarnations, but seems quite a few E39's around at the £17k mark, usually around 70k miles. This seems an unbelievable amount of car for the money. What am I missing is there something major that needs doing around 75k miles that makes people jump ship and as I am new to the world of these cars what should I really look out for?

Not really............ but others may disagree should you do a search.

101,000 miles on mine from new and it really hasn't missed a beat. Just the usual consumables apart from one anti roll bar bracket. Not even had to replace the clutch yet.

Grin factor still there nearly 5 years on.

These things are very strong. Engine not really stressed. Chain-driven so no rubber cambelts to worry about changing. Only bugbear engine-wise is the variable valve timing system (Vanos), and a couple of sensors (MAFs). BMW's warranty should cover these (but the warranty is expensive).

The clutch won't tolerate much abuse from unsympathetic drivers. Sold my car with 70k miles and the original clutch was fine.

Brakes are ok for normal use but not massively strong.

Steering isn't brilliant, and is a bit too assisted.

V8 sounds great when the engine is cold or at higher revs, but generally too muted for my liking!

Should also mention that they don't even need any obsessive servicing regime. A computer display dictates the servicing schedule, which will be roughly every 10-15,000 miles.

Servicing every 15k miles, mines in for an Inspection 1 in a couple of weeks, got quoted £370 + VAT.

The warranty next year is gonna be £1800, so that'll go by the by and I'll get it serviced at an independant, and put a bit of cash aside for any "problems"

Mine had a new clutch at 60k miles, other than that its a great mile mincher and accelerates like its on fire!

Bruiser or cruiser, its your choice!

Mine has done 115K. I think that you should look at an M5 with the extended warranty. I don't want to scare you but mine has needed about £15k of work under the warranty in the last year and had a new gearbox at 80k. Contrary to the above the yearly cost of extending the warranty is £970; I know because I just paid it.

Get one with a warranty and enjoy. I reckon that it's the best all rounder of all time.

ps conflict of interest; I'm selling mine!

If you don't mind me asking. What the hell went wrong with the gearbox?

Check the thread and bm3w.com - warranty costs ARE going up, but its still one helluva good motor. I won't be selling mine in a hurry, just working on way sof improving it (suspension, brakes, superchargers ......... )

What else is there, really, for sub-£20k which serves up such a formidable repertoire?

I would point out another weakness, regarding the car's stability at grossen velocity in cross-winds which I find far from perfect, something that seriously accentuates that oft-reported 'vagueness about the dead ahead' concerning the steering.

Having said that, the steering wheel itself is part of a pretty damn faultless ergonomic enclave and the whole ensemble encourages a superlative psychological focus to the helmwork at hand which is found in very few alternative saloons, even AMG Mercs.

The Mitsubishi EVOs possess the same intensity but even I am loosing faith in this option since the number of toothless, Essexian enthusiasts are entirely too numerous amongst the ownership.

To quote from the original Bromhead, "what are you waiting for?"

Thanks for the info on warranty costs. I think that I will ring BMW head office to find out if they'll admit to the changes.

The gearbox on my M5 was changed because of loud whining under the previous owner.

Perhaps I've been unlucky?

I have an M5 for sale with under 70k miles, under the £17k mark and with a fresh new 1 year BMW warranty. See my ad in the classifieds if interested,
