Hello everyone smile

So think I’m buying a F83 M4 tomorrow. Just a question regarding fuel.
Is it absolutely necessary to use premium fuel with this car? You know V-Power, Esso supreme etc will I need to use this or is normal 95 fuel okay?

Thanks guys smile

If it says it needs super then fill it with super. It will run on the regular stuff if in a pinch and not really on a high load, but it's better to run super on boosted cars.

Just recently sold a F83 m4, they run happily on 95, they'll run slightly better on premium but the ECU will adjust to both, personally I try to use 99.

Just to add that I’ve noticed a quite startling increase in fuel economy on my RS Megane when run on 99. It actually works out significantly cheaper for me to use it if I can get it at a sensible price. Sainsbury’s super seems to be the best £ per mile.
The difference on the on board display is c. 33mpg on 95 and c. 44mpg on 99.

That’s Interesting. Sainsbury’s super is only 97 octane too so far inferior to Esso, Shell etc

My advice would be:

(1) Use premium if you plan to drive it hard/trackdays
(2) Use premium if its a keeper. If it's on a 3 year lease, then put whatever into it.

Well, you're buying the worst version of the M3/4, but despite this you should still run it on Super Unleaded. Tesco Momentum would be fine, it's what I run my M5 on.

(3) Don't buy a 3 years old one rofl

Yep, I was surprised how much difference it made. Never noticed it on any other car, so I suspect very much not all cars will show this. Never really noticed much difference in how it drives though.
I’m pretty sure it says 99 octane on the pump, I’ll have a look next time I fill up

Wow! Do you actually see that difference or is it just the on board computer?

In my Accord diesel, if I fill with regular, the computer says 520 miles to empty but if I fill with premium it says 600 miles to empty. However I've never confirmed how accurate this is.

I’ve never actually done the sums but it certainly make a big difference between fill-ups. Seems to tally with what the display says, about 25% more mileage.

I have a F83 and run it on premium fuel but it is just a high days and holidays car so doesn’t do much mileage. Standard will be fine too as the car will automatically sort out the lower octane rating. I see it as the equivalent of drink tap water or bottled spring water. Both are fine, just ones slightly better than the other biggrin

Why’s that? I get convertibles are not everyone’s cup of tea which is fair enough.
Me personally I love convertibles and if your talking because it slightly lowers the performance with it been heavier due to the convertible roof and not the carbon one on the F82. Never really going to notice the 0-60 2/3 second difference or much difference in performance unless your going to be taking it on tracks which I absolutely won’t be. Plus I’m getting the competition so it’s 30bhp more or so than standard so that will possibly make up for it.

It was tongue in cheek. You're right though, I aren't a fan of convertibles.

I assume you do know that it isn't the weight of the roof that makes a 'vert heavier.

It is the under-floor bracing that they have to fit to try to make the shell somewhere closer to the strength of the shell with the additional strength of having a solid roof fitted.

check the inside of your fuel filler cap and it will say what the minimum fuel you should run it on

My F13 M6 says "minimum 98 RON", so I give it the best quality fuel that's 98+ only. This generation of ///M cars are very sensitive to fuel and there’s a lot of garbage in regular supermarket unleaded and you don’t know what previous owners have been filling your car up with.

So for this reason I stick to the best quality fuels from Shell, BP Ultimate and Mobil only. It’s not just marketing guff, the best super-unleaded really does make a difference to performance cars and in Direct-Injection cars it significantly helps reduce the possibility of an LSPI/Super-knock event. I also run a high-quality PEA-based Fuel Injector cleaner every 2,000 miles to help keep carbon deposits at bay and to look after the injectors as best as possible.

My G80 says 95RON and my F80 was the same IIRC. I ran/run both on min 97 though.
