Oil Change Intervals
Discussion
After some advice please my F10 M5 is currently on 38k miles I have covered 5000 miles in the last year, it had a oil and filter change a year ago .The I Drive has it due in 10000 miles time so does BMW the last time it was in for a check up they said leave it until it's due but I would prefer to get it done shortly as I think it should be changed once a year can this be logged on the I drive or is it only set to the preset service dates
You're right that an annual oil and filter change is often a good idea, regardless of mileage. The BMW iDrive, however, is designed to suggest maintenance based on a combination of mileage and time elapsed, which is why it might not line up with your annual timeline.
While the system can be reset by your mechanic or dealership after every oil change, it's not typically user-customizable to change the frequency of reminders. Your best bet would be to keep track of your annual oil changes separately, as you can't really tweak the iDrive's algorithms for preventative maintenance.
Remember, these systems are designed as a guideline. If you want to do more frequent oil changes, it's absolutely okay and won't harm your vehicle. As long as you're keeping a record of your maintenance, you should be good to go.
Get it done, your rod bearings will thank you later.
A group of us firmly believe that long service intervals, poor maintenance and lack of mechanical sympathy in the early life of these cars is what does a lot of the damage to the rod bearings.
It also doesn't need to go to BMW, any decent indy will be able to service it and update the idrive.
