I currently can't search on PH so sorry if there is a thread on this but I have had a scroll and can't find it but.....

Why is there no discussion on the x5m on here.

It's ticking a few boxes (2016 car) and sure it may be better to have the engine in an m6 or m5 ...

But what's the deal with the x5m?

Is it a decent car?

I want aomething comfortable and practical that can still be an event (c63, rs6, etc etc all under consideration)

There are a few on here that have(had) them, and I always hear/read good things about them from their owners. I've always fancied one myself too, but in fairness I'd struggle to run one though. The E53 X5 4.8iS I had almost ruined me, and the X5M is in a totally different league to that in comparison.

Ran a 2017 car from new for 2 years. A very capable vehicle… bought very much because my wife liked it… it replaced an F10 M5 as a daily runabout. It was quick enough and pretty much defied the laws of physics to a point, but a bit blunt with it. The first 4x4 M vehicle I’d owned and it was nice to be able to all of the power down all of the time. It was a death trap int the winter due to its weight and very wide summer tyres. Had two huge near misses losing control on ice/snow at crawling speeds (just couldn’t stop it) which led to me to committing to a separate set of winters.

Although thought I enjoyed it at the time, the ride (like all modern M cars to be fair) is just too firm in comfort setting to be truly comfortable- Porsche seem to manage this on the Cayenne so why not BMW? MPG over 30,000 miles of Shell VP was c15mpg. Interior when well specified is the best ever from BMW imo. Also the upgraded M multifunction seats (think standard only on late cars) are the very best I’ve ever had on any vehicle from any manufacturer.

Glad I experienced it but wouldn’t have another. Trying to be all things to all men but just ends up being a bit compromised at everything. Don’t allow yourself to be seduced by it’s performance in a short test drive- it’s compromises became more noticeable the longer I owned it.

Thanks this is super interesting.

How was the suspension on the M5.

I'm in London and currently commuting across what may as well be a mogul field at 15 mph

I guess I want my cake and to eat it. I want drama power noise and experience, twinned with comfort and practicality..that's probably a thread in its own right!

I know this is an M forum I have recently, in December, swapped my M6 for a 2016 Cayenne Turbo that has all the ingredients you mention and is a big notch up in quality over M in my exeperience.
It has sensible rear tyres 295/35 21's Porsche rated yokohama £175 a corner, does 24mpg on a run, mine has amongst others a sports exhaust, Burmester, heated /cooled 18 way adjustable seats it is a very good place to sit. It's my second Cayenne I do like themsmile 30K miles for £46K good value too.

The F10 M5 had a lovely ride, just a bit conservative for some and difficult to get the power down unless heat in the tyres. The F90 M5 non comp early models rode beautifully and sounded nice pre GPF. Think this car is often overlooked and soon phased-out but I think could be worth looking for (and possibly similar price) to a X5M as a beautiful allrounder. It also much quicker than the X5M which felt quick round the doors but tailed off over 50mph. Both the F10 and F90 M5’s feel ridiculously fast well in to three figures (if that’s important).

This! My pre-LCI, pre-OPF F90 M5 was superb and sounded amazing! Huge mistake getting rid of it!

To the OP: have you considered a G05 X5 M50i, I think it would be an interesting alternative to a G85 X5M

I've had one for 3 years and very am happy with it. If BMW made an M5 touring I might have considered it but we need somwehere to shove a 10 stone dog.
BiL has a Cayenne but I prefer the interior of the X5.

Running costs are what you would expect for an M car really, just spent over £1300 on some new tyres today.

That’s the trouble I had, needed a big boot but no M5 touring hence I purchased a X5M.

Hopefully you got the proper BMW * marked super sports if running 21” wheel. Don’t make the the same mistake thinking any other tyre will be fine…

Definitely, luckily blackcircles had 15% off yesterday for Michelins - turned up today too!

I (stupidly) got a bit giddy one Friday morning in a BMW dealership in 2016 and bought a new one to the tune of pretty much £100k.

It was monstrously fast, sounded incredible, down back-road or motorway it was simply impressively capable at pretty much everything and I hardly ever saw another one on the road.

I had mine for 13 months before selling it to Romans International. In those 13 months, I covered 8k miles, went through a set of tyres, a lot of V Power and the only issue I encountered was with the front discs, which were replaced under warranty.

I sold it to Romans for £52k and it was at that point I realised why I didn't see many of them around. It was because anyone with half a brain wouldn't be idiotic enough to buy one new (apart from an idiot like me)

It still remains one of my biggest losses on a new car in a short timeframe.

Do I regret buying one? Nope!

Have I ever considered buying another one? Yep!

If someone was going into buying one thinking it would be cheap to run and cheap to fix if it goes wrong then they're definitely buying the wrong car.

But in the right colour and spec, I think they now demonstrate great value for money! *(Goes off to lose a few hours looking at the classifieds)

Here are some photos of mine when I had it;

I had a quick look around one the other day in a retail park. I said to my missus that if we ever win the lottery an X5M will be one of the first cars that I buy! I absolutely love them! cloud9

Those rears are the same width(325) as what are on the GLE400d, only they are 22" on that. I've just recently had to put 2 new rear tyres on it and it isn't a year old until the end of March! cry

Having big/wide wheels seemed a good idea at the time...well it was until it came to the cost of replacing them though! hehe

At least the fronts have a bit more life left in them in comparison to you, whereas you’ve had to shell out for the lot! yikes

Well done on getting the right tyres. One thing I was shocked about is insurance cost, £240 per year! My old Merc E320cdi was £600! It’s the cheapest vehicle I have ever insured, so atleast something is cheap about it!biglaugh

We’ve had a 2018 X5M for 4 years now, my wife drives it most of the time. I love driving it, great engine, handling is genuinely fun, interior great and levels of kit really good. Ours has been no real trouble, just routine maintenance needed. As others have said the ride quality is on the rough side, but you do get used to it. We’ve bought a set of winter wheels and tyres since it’s like a 2 ton sledge in the snow without them.
