Will I be disappointed with an X3/4M after an M4?

Looking at changing soon and have been eyeing up X3/4Ms. Currently got a 17 plate M4.
I love the M4, but values are starting to tank and I have a decent bit of equity in it at the moment which I'd like to take out and put elsewhere.
I'd been thinking of getting into a low deposit PCP deal and spotted one on an X4M. They seem to be marginally quicker than my current M4 but I'm not sure if the move is something I'd later regret as I do enjoy the lairy nature of what I've got currently.
There's good deals going about on M2 Comps as well but I feel like this would be a step down as you lose the luxury and space of the 4, as well as probably being upside down for the majority of the deal as the new M2 will be released soon.
As a result I'm really at a loss, the ideal replacement would be an F90 M5 but insurance seems to be daft money compared to the M4 and the X4M, and I imagine fuel consumption would take a dive too.
TLDR:
Got an M4, want to get rid to release equity.
Thinking X3M, X4M might feel boaty - no tail out antics.
F90 M5 - ruinous to run? No low deposit deals about.
New M3/4 - still too expensive.
What we thinking - do I leave BMW?
Had a Cooper S which was great, as was my M140 and do like my M4 too!

I think you may find the performance more than ‘a bit’ quicker in the real world courtesy of a fair chunk more hp and awd. Admittedly the X3M / X4M weigh a good bit more but the hp increase is still something I would find amusing.
The handling and ride might not appeal though, I have an X3 and the higher driving position is great but you can’t alter the centre of gravity and it will not feel like an M4.
There is an X3/4M page on FB which might be worth a look.
A test drive will I am sure tell you what you need. The ride in an M4 is hard …. With a higher up driving position wil it actually feel worse if as hard … and is that hard in a 4x4 going to feel too full on for the type of car ?

To be fair, an X3M is considerably heavier and its BHP/ton is quite a bit down on the F82 M4. Other than away from the line, in my opinion I can't see it feeling much quicker for the extra BHP, really.Fastestlaps figures:

(Take them with half a pinch of salt but at least indicative.)
On a track with warm tyres on a sunny day and M4 will be of course be quicker.. however in the real world living in the UK on a wet February morning an M4 won't see which way an X3M/X4M went. also it will let you kick the end out on an X3M and feels very controlled.

You said that but I have rarely found that the limiting factor was traction. Stuff like line of sight, traffic and licence conservation seem to be the limiting factors.Hammy98 said:

Fair points, I did go and have a nosey round one and it was a lot taller in person than I was expecting. Salesman wasn't keen on letting me have a go unless I was placing a deposit - despite him knowing I turned up in the M4.There is an X3/4M page on FB which might be worth a look.

I've never owned nor driven an SUV type car so think you're right in that test drive is the way to go. Will ring around a few dealers.

This was part of my thinking with looking at the X3/4M. Living in Scotland it's raining more often than not so the X cars would be less frustrating in that respect.Good to know it'll let you get the tail out also. I'd heard they were rear biased however I still expected it to be quite 'safe'. Food for thought, cheers!
