I’ve got an auto late-2015 M4, ex-demo but basically owned by me from new. 29k, full history, and not abused to any great extent.

It’s started making brief nasty ‘graunching’ sound when engaging 3rd (from 2nd) at anything over 3.5k rpm. If you’re tootling round town and changing up at 2k rpm there is no noise - but more than 3.5k whether in auto or manual, under acceleration or even coasting, there is the noise. Seems like it comes from the front near side of the engine bay. Having tuned in to the sound it also makes a very slight version as it changes out of 3rd up to 4th. But not in any other gears.

Gut instinct is that given it’s both gear and engine speed specific it feels like a synchro issue in the gearbox? But low miles, cared for, auto so I can’t have knackered it through poor gear changes…. Any other ideas. And if not, any recommends for someone to look at it - I’ve seen references to ‘allgears’ in Notts but they’ve not done auto boxes since 2007.

Ideas gratefully received!

Possibly the DCT box is leaking and thus low on oil.
In any case its a trip to see someone with expertise seems called for.
