New M4 CP owner - Stage 1 tune
Discussion
I’ll tell you why…:
IT DOESNT NEED IT
Unless you’re regularly doing 60-120mph runs which means you’re out on a motorway with no cameras in the middle of the night, it’s not needed at all. I had one and I don’t know what kind of driving you’re doing but I can honestly say that the car was too much for public roads.
Maybe if you live in LA and the roads are always warm and dry, yes. In the UK? No

I joined the UK owners group on FB as I'm in the market for one and nigh on 80% of the people on there are running 550bhp+.
I personally do not understand it, lose your warranty, stress components further and increase your chances of a potential crank hub slip.
It's a fast enough car as is IMO.

I feel the same, and I don't ever get out of mine thinking that it isn't quick enough. I'd love to know how they put 550bhp(and the equivalent torque) down on the road to be fair. The car is lively enough in standard form through the rear wheels for me. I'm in the does it really need it camp too.
I've never felt mine lacking power on road nor track. I'd rather keep my BMW warranty. Once a car is mapped, that's the point of no return for the car, you'll never be able to add BMW warranty to it in the future.
The M3/4 Facebook group does, I hope, give a false sense of the average owner. It's also 80% 3D number plates, pops and bangs maps and awful rear lights if you're looking at those that post rather than including all the members that don't post.

I’m thinking of having a stage 1 tune done on my 2018 M4 competition. I had my 2016 M5 tuned and it struggled to put the power down. Anyone had it done and does it feel and go much better. I’ve been told the car will produce an extra 50 BHP and 130 NM of torque.
Hi mick, just did exactly this stage 1 upgrade on my 2019 M4 cp. No pipes, cats etc touched, simple remapping.Wow, like day and night. Before i liked the car and was thinking a lot if i really need it.
We checked the car up front and after. 452hp and 540nm, after 525 hp and 690! nm.
Was told up front like you quote, 50+120 plus.
Had been mostly interested in the torque upgrade, as i have a manual and like to drive it lazy in 6th most the time,
when no advanced driving is required.
This torque upgrade is huge! The 100-200km/h in 6th gear time shrinks around 6seconds!
If i go for it on a dry and proper road the 100-200km/h time shrinks for 2.5 seconds, what might not sound too much,
but feels huge as well. The guy who did the remapping told me that those figures are no problem for the engine,
but have to accept, no guarantee(which anyway has expired).
Did so far 4.000km and no problem at all. The feeling to drive the car has changed more than i thought before.
The power seems to never end, the way it revs is so good! With a price of less than 1k its a no brainer for me
and should have done it way earlier.
But! Have to say, i live in germany in an area, where near to no restrictions on the highways around
and depending on the time of the day even 250+(its open) is fine, without risking anybodys health.
If i d live in the uk, or even worse, in switzerland, probably wouldnt, as even here my license now is in
more danger on restricted roads....
Just saw i forgot one important thing!
Anybody who i talked to, who knows more about the car and remapping, than i do,
said to do the crank hub fix first! The higher power might do damage to the engine if that s not done up front.
Had a bit trouble to get the parts for it, bmw couldnt get them, but lightweight was happy to send it to me within one day
and the price was bit more than 100plus tax. Cost to put it on depends a lot who does the job...

There aren't many occasions when I think.... I wish my M4 Comp had more power. 450 ish will do for now.
I do wonder what it would be like with 500+ just out of curiosity of course.
But then stick the box in manual so you never need a kickdown and all is forgotten. If you think you've run out of shove then it's probably because you are already doing 120++ and that Fiesta ST that was up your pipes a moment ago is now a dot in your rear view mirror.
Hold on, this is PH I shall go and chastise myself outside.

I'd definitely want mine tuning if I lived in germany as well. I'd want 600bhp plus over there(or I'd probably just buy an F90 M5 and tune that up a bit). I'm the UK though the M4s performance is more than adequate I reckon. and depending on the time of the day even 250+(its open) is fine, without risking anybodys health.

FOMO and showing off. If you don't have xxx BHP then what even are you? There will always be someone quicker than you and with more power than you.I personally do not understand it, lose your warranty, stress components further and increase your chances of a potential crank hub slip.

My comments above are not aimed at you though

each to their own but there is nothing exciting about fat torque, its the petrol equivalence of driving a 330d
It has a decent top end though, not quite NA but nothing like a diesel. In fact, low end torque can be great to wake up a chassis. It can make a car very exciting indeed without having to resort to top end, which is not always practical. I get what you are saying but fat torque just takes away the essence of achievement. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy torque but you can have too much of a good thing. Take the tesla as a random example (almost as bad as vegans dropping in they are vegan to a conversation), its dull and boring even if easy to make progress.
I think we've gone too far in the power stakes and echo the comments above that a retune really isn't necessary. The old 3CP never made me think I need more, if anything, I'd have sacrificed the torque but kept the top end.
Its been 2 years since I drove the m5, its being overhauld for the winter but that rewards through torque, gears and top end. I was asked recently of all the cars I've owned whats the most fun to drive. My 30 year old mini cooper.
OP you're a few days in, do with your car what you will but what you gain in speed you'll lose in progress. It isn't fun if you're only able to do things above the legal limit
