I'm in the market for a M5 un decided on comp or not depends on what I can find.

One thing I have noticed is on some of them it states a standard feature of

Rde exhaust emissions standard

Is this the OPF? I really don't want a car with the OPF

What year did the OPF come into play?

The OPF is one thing but then they removed all the pops and bangs which imho was a catastrophe. Mine was built Sep 18 and bought by me Mar 19; unsure if it had the OPF but it still sounded great.

So is it safe to say I need a car built in 2018 to avoid the OPF and keep the pops and crackles?

Aug 19 built date GPF introduced. If can’t access build date, you can yell as runs with current full digital dash and OS7. Pops gone but car benefits from M8 gearbox and improved launch traction.

For the OP - build date is inside the door frame so if the car is for sale and in their showroom they should be able to tell you.

Pops and bangs are ridiculous.

Total personal thing (pops and bangs) I guess. I thought they were great for the first 30 minute demo drive, but prefer ownership in a car without as it benefits from being driven in one of the more aggressive throttle maps, which in the earlier cars is a bit anti social for me. As my car is my daily run around the pops would be a bit wearing ‘round the doors and it’s not like it just happens occasionally when pushing on. Good news is used buyers have a choice.

Only in sports mode so turned off when the car starts albeit can be turned on at the press of a button. The beauty of modern machinery I guess + opinions vary so one person may like it and another not. Me I loved it.

Plus surely no one is buying a 4.4 v8 for the silence spin

the 4.4 v8 sounds terrible compared to its contemporaries thought. Both Mercedes and Audi have managed to make their V8s still sound like V8s, the S63 sounds awful in comparison. I don't know how as BMW aren't exactly green when it comes to V8s. It's a shame, as I like pretty much everything else about the F10 / F90, just not how it sounds. And it's made no better with downpipes / back box / exhaust mods.

Also, the pops and bangs aren't very good for the alusil liners, so there is potential early cylinder wear there.

The F10 M5 didn't sound great, but the F90 M5, especially pre-OPF and with the M Sport exhaust (incidentally, like mine...), sounds fantastic!

We will have to agree to disagree I am afraid.
