So I’ve decided I want an M power car. I’ve been looking online and the F10 M5 are going for really good prices 2nd hand.

I found one with 32k miles t a budget that’s very comfortable for me - I just wanted peoples opinions on buying a used M power car. It’s a 65 plate from a BMW approved used dealership offering 1 year of warranty. Obviously I’ll be paying for the extended warranty but what’s people’s opinions on going second on an M5 F10? Cus honestly the prices for the second hand F10s looks almost too good to be true.

Cheers

What letters does the registration plate start with?

Hey,

You’re probably not going to get too many replies because this topic has been done to death many times, in many threads.

But, to be helpful, here’s a cut/paste of my last response on the same topic (btw, I bought mine 2nd hand and have driven over 50k miles in it):

How reliable: On the face of it, they seem quite reliable.. until they're not, when they can get expensive fast - but that's fast BMWs isn't it?

The gearboxes appear to be very reliable if the cars are standard. The car does a good job of managing clutch pack wear (regularly defaulting to second-gear starts in order to even out the wear). You can have them serviced (even though BMW says you don't need to) and the gearbox is in lots of other BMWs so there's good knowledge out there with specialists now.

Depending on the car, they can use quite a bit of oil (again, name a fast BMW these days that doesn't) but it's hugely variable by car, doesn't always seem to be related to how they've been owned and driven and is either 'nothing to worry about' or a 'sign of the apocalypse' depending on who you listen to.

In short: If you're buying an F10 M5, go in with your eyes open - there's a reason they're cheap second hand, people are afraid of a big bill, but as long as you budget or get a warranty, there's few cars that are faster or more capable for the money. But if you're looking for cheap, reliable motoring as your primary requirement, buy a KIA laugh

Yeh I imagined it had been done to death so I apologise.

Thanks for the tips. Just wondering, how much have you spent to warranty your car? I looked online briefly and got a couple of quotes for around £1500.

If yours is an official BMW car with a BMW warranty then you should be able to extend it for somewhere between 1 and 1.5k. BMW or Mondial are the only warranties that people recommend I think.

Personally, I’ve run mine without the warranty for 5 years. So far I’m well ahead but I keep the money aside (effectively underwriting myself) ready for the (almost) inevitable.

Don’t forget though, running costs are still substantial from time to time, even with a warranty. Full set of tyres is £1k (MPSS or MPS4S only!). Full set of rotors and pads is £2k. Both last really well but you need to budget for them so it’s not a shock.

Seriously though, buy one. Practical family saloon car with twice as much ‘go’ than ‘show’. Plus, it’s a big-boy car, with none of that namby pamby 4WD rubbish laugh

haha i'm finding this out now. Thanks by the way, this is the sort of info i was looking for. Surely the rotos/pads is a once every few years so sort of thing though right?

I bought my 64 plate F10 comp AUC 2 years ago - the dealer can extend the AUC warranty to 2 years (for a ~£500 cost to them, from what I've read) so worth using that as part of the negotiation if that matters to you (I did).

The BMW insured warranty quotes I've had are circa £750 for a year, I think it goes up when you hit 60k miles.

I've had no trouble whatsoever from the car, and it's now on 34k miles (and going up for sale very soon) - they really are incredibly competent things, do it!

I would be very wary of yorkshire plates eg YJ, YK

Yeah, exactly that. I've found tyres, discs and pads last remarkably well for a big car, but mine spends most of its life on the motorway so not massively surprising. But as I say, worth budgeting because otherwise a service, plus discs and pads and suddenly you're presented with a bill for £1,500 rather than the £350 or something you were expecting!

Don't let that put you off though. Buy one. In 10 years time we'll be astonished that it was ever legal to own a 550bhp, RWD saloon car with no 24hr government tracking and geofenced speed limiters laugh

+1 this is what I’ve been paying £893 I think this year. Much more if it’s interrupted so make sure you carry it on from the AUC one. Brilliant car though, love mine after 2 years, I have no appetite to change it. Also no problems here from a reliability perspective but I won’t be letting the warranty lapse!
