Z4M Basic questions

Evening All,
Just got back from test driving a Z4M, 2007, 89k, FSH. Only mods were from purchase, BMW tints, Stubby aerial and lowering springs by Blisten.
Loads of history, even though the log book has a gap if 5 years and 39k, but receipts and invoices / MOTs cover that gap. It is due an inspection 1 in 1k. Also comes with a 12 month warranty.
When I test drove it, it felt tighter and more solid that my 2012 GTD commuter. But I did notice that on the rev dial, it had an amber and 2 red sections lit up? is this normal? some BMW magic display ?

It is an engine warming up display, when you start it from cold it will have a few more amber sections on it. When fully warm it has the 1 amber and 2 red sections iirc. My Z4M/E92 M3/X5 4.8iS all had the same feature on them.
ETA...you get 8 amber lights from cold and I think that 7 of them go out as the engine warms up. I just checked on an old photo of mine I had.

I bought my Z4M Coupe last December (after 5 years of 3.0Si Coupes).
Those lights in the rev counter are normal, and go out one at a time as the engine warms up until just the last one is lit. It's because you really don't want to put high loads on the S54 engine until it is warmed up. My lights go out before the oil temperature gauge has moved from the bottom (50 degrees I think) but I never give mine any welly until it's well past 75 degrees. Otherwise you risk suffering from premature crank rod bearing shell issues, although at 89K miles it's likely to be needing them soon if they haven't already been replaced.
My car is on 77K and I'm considering getting them replaced on a precautionary basis as my Indy replaced some on a 74K engine last week and said they were showing noticeable signs of wear. It's probably £1K or so, but much cheaper than a rebuild if they let go!
An Inspection 1 service is probably £500 or so by a BMW Specialist but considerably more at a main agent because it includes checking the Valve clearances and adjusting with shims because these engines don't have hydraulic lifters. So it's a 2 day job because they have to be checked with the engine completely cold. Luckily I have 2 ex-Sytner guys near me who have set up on their own, but there is a list of BMW Specialists on the BMW General pages on here.
One last thing to look for in the Service History is the running in service that should be done at around 1,000 miles. I don't think it's a big issue if it was done a few hundred later, but it definitely needs to have been done.
Despite all that they are fantastic cars and I'm so pleased I took the plunge and got one. They are also pretty rare with just 600 or so Coupes and another 60 or so Roadsters being registered in the UK.
There are loads of useful tips and information about them on z4forum.com.

Hi All,
Thanks for clearing that up.
The one I have found is silver (Not grey) I was after black ideally. But great seller, warranty and history and he has done some work already to smarten it us and did brake lines for MOT. Plus at his price (£15,650) it will leave me some for an inspection 1, lower shells and rear tyres (MOT Advisory)

It's probably Titanium Silver in that case.
Which is much easier to keep looking clean than any of the black options, although Ruby Black and Carbon Black can look fantastic when the sun hits them right!
I'd budget for the best part of £500 for an Inspection 1 at a good BMW Indy, and at least £1K for replacement bearing shells based on the quote I just got.
So you ought to factor those into whatever you negotiate.
My favourite colours are Imola Red and Interlagos Blue, but my Silver Grey one was advertised at a price I just couldn't ignore - and it does have Imola seats.
Sorry, but I can't help myself! Gratuitous photo.

Super thick 10W60 oil. Takes forever to get up to operating temperature (approx. 100 deg C), even on a hot day.Just got back from test driving a Z4M, 2007, 89k, FSH. Only mods were from purchase, BMW tints, Stubby aerial and lowering springs by Blisten.

Thanks, after having two 3.0Si Coupes there was only one replacement option.

But Sepang Bronze is super-rare - IIRC only 10 MCs that colour were registered in the UK. And someone posted a photo last month of 4 of them together on this thread:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t...
Still any MC is quite rare as the UK only got about 600 of them and Dan seems pleased with his!
I'm pretty chuffed, it is going in next week for an INS1 and swap out the bearing shells (preventative) as we are planning a long weekend to Saint Nazaire so a quick health check as well. (C19 dependant!)
The Bronze ones actually look quite good. I have had a Titan Silver BMW previously (E46 328i Touring) and the black detail really suited it. I'm still not 100% on this colour. Black looks good when clean, and dark grey always looks good. Might get a wrap or respray in the future.
One thing that I can not get used to is changing from 1st to 2nd gear!!!!!

I fitted Vibratechnics engine mounts on my M Roadster, sharpens up the gear shift a bit, also helps the front end on turn in.

My M roadster is on 100k now. I've always let it warm up but everyone seems to think rod bearing is a good idea. I'll be getting an oil analysis on my next oil change shortly just to confirm if I need to be thinking about replacement is better sooner rather than later.
Clutch Delay Valve delete was night and day. The independant garage I used removed mine for free. Well worth having done.
