Have you owned an F10 M5 and had an engine failure, or expensive failure? I am looking at replacing my E60 with one, so I am interested in whether people have suffered any failures with the engine.

Cracked exhaust manifolds and failed high pressure fuel pump. Not massive failures but were very expensive to fix.

2013 owned from 9months old, for a few years, c.30k miles.
Other than normal servicing required turbo coolant pipe insulation update (done at service) and a/c condensers replacing (common F-series issue).

I aren't a fan of the M6 and the M6 GC is out of my budget.

My 2015 M5 on 137k now, owned since new.

I had new crankcase breathers, cylinder heads and injectors at about 90k as well as a replacement transmission sump - covered by BMW. I’ve also replaced front wishbones which comes down to wear and tear for its mileage.

It has yet to land me directly with a major bill.

Very happy with it overall.

x2 new cylinder heads? interesting, do you know why they were replaced?

13 months in a 14 plate LCI, 48k to 63k miles and no problems.

BMW Approved used.

I can’t remember to be honest.

The problem was ultimately the breather filters being pretty bunged up.

It seemed like massive overkill / scope creep to me, and if I had been paying the bill I’d certainly have wanted to know why this was warranted. But as BMW we’re covering it (£8k) I just let them crack on.

I recall the injectors were replaced simply because they didn’t like the idea of having to remove them (potentially damaging them) and then re-fitting. Again, I didn’t complain.

The transmission sump was weeping slightly hence the replacement. It was also a good opportunity to get a the fluid changed.

Never had an issue with my F10 M5 and no issues, so far, M6GC. About 30k miles driven between the two.

They seem reliable for the most part but knowing your luck I'd find one with an extended warranty......

LOL, with luck like mine, how could I possibly go wrong? hehe The only issue with the warranty is that even AUC cars don't get checked to see if they have been remapped at some point in the past, and if they find it has when a warranty claim is made, then they tend not to honour it, so a warranty can be pretty pointless unless you were the first owner of the car.

I had a 2012 F10 M5 for 5 months, did 2k miles and the bottom end went on it. My mechanic said the crank has most likely had it and it's probably spun a rod too. I sold it as a non runner as I had no warranty - expensive mistake.

I highly recommend you get a warranty

I’ve had quite a few M cars over the years and wouldn’t touch one without a warranty. Too expensive if something happens as it’s usually engine trouble!
