I’m planning on doing my first track day in my own car (M2 comp) at Brands Hatch. I’ve been on a few track days before at Brands Hatch, so have experience of the track albeit not in my own car.

What are people thoughts on track days insurance? I’ve had a couple of quotes one from Adrain Flux at £370 and another from Grove and Dean for just over £300. Both seem £££.....

Worth adding it’s not a magazine track day.

Imho it is a lot of money for an extremely unlikely event assuming you aren't "giving it death" in your own car. In my experience other drivers stick to only over taking on the straights and it all seems to be done in a fairly courteous way. At my last track day some of the Caterham drivers were getting impatient as they were catching at the corners then dropping back massively on the straights; in hindsight I should have probably let them past but every day is a school day wink

I assume those prices are to cover the full cost of the car?

Most track day policies will let you stipulate how much cover you actually think you need - so £20k of cover (instead of £40k) may be half the premium.

Also be careful about the small print, as it may not cover accidents caused by mechanical failure - so if your engine seizes and punts you off into the barriers, you may not get a penny.

Think of it as more of a bodywork & chassis accident damage policy.

ETA: is it owned outright, or is it on a PCP/lease?

A friend & fellow PHer binned his 996T heavily on a continental circuit a few years back; he took out trackday insurance luckily, and they paid out with no hesitation whatsoever. Well worth it in his case.

So I can choose the level of cover I require?

If you're thinking of doing more than the odd day per year, then I'd go for a track specific insurer.

I use Mannings on my GT3;
agreed value of £130K,
8k miles PA,
and coverage for all uk tracks (assuming ATDO) premium it just under £1k.

Thankfully I've never needed to use it in over 10 years of tracking (touches wood...)

What’s ATDO?

Thanks that seems like much better value.

Association of Track Day Operators;
www.atdo.co.uk

basically an organisation who upkeep the standards for track day operation - all the major track day organisers are part of them
