Been away some time, previous member on Pistonheads but had nothing exciting to write about for years with company diesels. Consequently forgotten former login details and changed email addresses since and had to rejoin

Hope someone can give me some advice here..

Picked up M4 Competition Pack 67' plate from BMW Lincoln 29th May. 9200 miles on the clock,

Service indicator from collection said 'service due in 10,000 miles'.

I have done roughly 800 miles in the car and the start up message up until yesterday read 'service due in 9000 miles'

Went to start the car yesterday and engine warning light came on and said something similar to 'oil change required, seek BMW garage urgently'. I had had no previous warning or a count down

So instead of driving the car to the airport as planned i had to take a taxi and while i was on the way called BMW and asked why the car suddenly tells me without warning an oil service is due. They offered to collect it as i have a service plan, and the missus kindly went home to make a key available.

The car has been returned and nobody from BMW called to let me know or tell me what has been done and why. I called in to get feedback.

BMW have so far told me the following today and yesterday

'The car decides when the work is needed'

'Its an M car so is different to other cars'

And today 'You would have seen a count down timer' (please consider I only collected the car 34 days ago) to which i stated that if i had seen a countdown timer at point of purchase i would have asked for the work to be done there and then

I have had no prior warning of this and absolutely not seen a count down. I wouldn't not follow any advice to the letter. Garage have just told me that i am only 5 % out of the window for the change as it should have been conducted in June. I collected the car on 29th May

Can you let me know if this sounds right or if anyone has had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance
Jon

Is an oil change mileage and/or date since last done. When was the last oil service done (or has it only had a RIS?

Honestly, I dont know, never thought I'd need to check that after a month's ownership. Assumed as I took it from a BMW garage with their warranty and service pack I'd be doing a few more miles before heading back to the garage.

Im concerned as to why it would go from fine to 'take me to the garage now' in 24hrs. I need the car for work

I think the service intervals are 16k or every 2 years.

With the M4s I've seen, and have been discussed on forums, the first oil service (after RIS) is required either :-

(1) 2 years from *build date*

or

(2) when a set mileage of up to 18k has been reached, the exact mileage determined by driving style / use.

So whichever of (1) or (2) comes first.

I'm assuming, even as a 67 plate, yours could have been built in July 17 and therefore (1) the 2 years, from build date, is up and it's due the oil service.

I would have thought some warning, other than the date on the iDrive would occur though, but this may (help to) explain.

Can you put up a photo of the service information as displayed by the idrive?

If the calendar date as displayed by the iDrive went wonky then a service could suddenly go overdue.

Mine currently says serve dues 15000 08/2019
It’s getting done on the 23rd of july.
Prerrt sure if I left it till the 1st of August I’d get the same urgent message as you had .
The service requirements are mileage OR time lapsed which ever comes sooner

I assume this was the first service, but you can ‘dial up’ past services on iDrive
My Vehicle
Vehicle status
Service requirements
Service history

Maintenance visits are shown, and can be selected for more details.

Did it say it needs a service, or did it say add oil?

My F80 Comp Pack gave me a 200 mile window to add 1l of oil one day. That was a surprise a few months before the service was due. To be fair, it didn't burn through the added 1l any faster than it should and it was serviced as normal.
