M6 Grand Coupe Competition
Discussion
So having two very young kids now, I cant bring myself round to buying a sensible car however the M6GC seems sensible enough. I am a chav at heart and like noise. The AMG Mercedes please with that V8 thunder so does the M6 need a replacement exhaust?
Any thing to highlight to me? Common issues? MPG real life? And perhaps anyone tuned theirs?

I don’t have one (I have an F90 M5) but have had an F10 M5
My two pence worth......
It’s a great car, comfortable and a great place to be in, looks fab and is fast as you like.
Don’t buy one of these and ask about mpg
it’s a 4.4 V8 TT giving you near on 600hp........If you worry about mpg get a Prius
On a serious note if it’s anything like my F10 M5 then over three years and 33000 miles I had the following:
Running in service
Oil service x 2
Various pollen filters or whatever
Set of rear pads (they are used in the ABS system which you will see flashing quite a lot!)
Plugs
Two sets of rears, one set of fronts
That’s it
When I sold it it was just about to require
Oil service
New disks and pads at the front
New pads at the rear - possibly new disks as well
New tyres all round
I think from memory that was going to remove near on about about £4K from my wallet using a local BMW dealer but I could be wrong.
Do it, you only live once

I had an F10 M5 for 6 years and 65,000 miles (bought demonstrator at 1,500 mile) and have now had my M6 GC Comp Pack for about 15 months (from new).
For my needs they are perfect, hence getting M6 after the M5. I only had one issue with the M5 fixed under warranty and running costs were very reasonable with brakes and tyres the only costs other than basic servicing.
My M6 feels slightly quicker but then it has more power and seems a bit more nimble but that’s a relative term and could simply be down to the difference between a new car and 6 year old car.
Noise is not a big thing from the inside. The Comp Pack adds the sports exhaust and it is definitely louder, but from the inside of both cars you are quite isolated from the noise. You can certainly hear them from the outside and the noise of the M6 seems to turn heads if that is your thing. But certainly not as vocal as an AMG.
I love the looks of both cars from the exterior but the M6 looks a bit more ‘special’.
Big differences for me are the interior:
- the M6 feels very special inside with the full leather two tone dash with highlight stitching
- M5 is a proper 5 seater but the M6 is only an occasional 5 seater
- my M5 was an early car so pre LCI, later cars of both M5 and M6 have better tech
- if you have a young or growing family, one minor practical point I only found out after buying the M6 - the boot opening is narrower. I think the actual volume of the boot is very similar, but putting one particular large item in the boot is more difficult in the M6.
Took my M6 down to the Tuscan coast last year via the German Autobahns and through the Alps via Stelvio Pass. Can’t think of another car for the money that I would rather have driven.
If your looking for a practical car for the family that can be very comfortable one minute and a hooligan the next, M5 or M6 are great options for your shortlist.

I bought the M6 cabrio 4.4 in 2013, I only kept it 8 months. Interior was too low quality for my tastes and I found that irritating given the price point, think I paid £75k on sticker of £105k, big discounts even then. The noise was not very good, they made it sound a bit like a 4cyl rally car and the little exhaust pops on downshifts were sooo out of place on a big luxury GT, such a shame after the glorious high end sound of the V10 M6. Definitely get an AMG if sound matters.
Power was amazing, though no sense of speed. Handling was good for a big car, and it was actually good fun to drive, albeit not a sports car. Looks amazing IMO, great design and beautiful lines. It got plenty of compliments. BMW pack them full of good tech. I also thought the gearbox was brilliant and was fun to use.

If noise is important to you, don't get the M5/M6, it sounds like to 4 cylinder engines running separately, and very far away from the AMG V8 thunder. In my opinion, the biggest weakness in an otherwise fantastic car. Coming from an E92 M3 with 2 pipe mod, the F10 M5 was a huge disappointment in the sound, made worse by the ASD that pipes in a synthetic engine sound over the loudspeakers.Any thing to highlight to me? A CLS 63 AMG would be a better bet, in my opinion, if you are looking for proper V8 thunder.

If you had parked the car in that puddle and taken the photo you could have pretended it was being sold by Tom Hartley and added a further £20,000 to the asking price

I have a 2016 M6 GC (just ticking up to 1 year now)
for sound, just get an akra put on even tho they are pricey - 7k new, 3.5k used.
No issues to highlight what so ever.
MPG I average 16 in winter, 18 or so in summer. I do 70% short journeys and never ever hang about.
One time I done a 150 round trip doing mostly 75 give or take and averaged 28 or something. never bothered again.
I recently done a road trip around scotland in the M6 and it handles bloody well and felt very stable at high speed on small roads.
the M6 GC is a special looking car, to this day its still hard to beat the sheer looks it has.
Mine is San Marino Blue which I find just stunning. I also liked the Sakhir Orange exterior but seemed really hard to come by.
I know some people have or mentioned tuning their M6 but I can't fathom why, its a fast car anyway but more importantly the M6s biggest limitation is grip.
Its one of my issues with the car, not so much during spring/summer but certainly during winter is an utter pain.
I beleive MP4S tyres could over come this issue enough to not be a pain in the rear.
