I really admire this approach but I'm thinking anyone that tries it these days must be as near to indispensable as makes no difference. The employers are having a field day in the current economic circs. In my line of work the number of 'jobs' advertised for unpaid interns (2010 speak for 'slave') is now overtaking the number of paid positions.

I did last month and was told that a 2.5% will be in place with septembers pay and back dated from 1st august.

I got a surprise bonus the other day, the company is the busiest it has been in 7 years (so my boss sais).

Having said that we do work our balls off for it, and i get a pay review in December, another 15% will do.

We are recruiting electronics hardware / embedded software engineers at the moment and the problem we are finding is that because the climate is a bit delicate, everyone is staying put so the availability of good people is quite poor.

But I have to say if someone ever tries to hold a gun to my head and says they want a payrise or they are off, I'll let them go. No one is indispensible and I'm not being held to ransom.

If one of my staff gave me an ultimatum like that, recession or not, unless they were completely indispensable I'd let them go.

I guess it depends on you/your companies approach in general. Ideally I would like to be in a position where my salary is fair, with defined a defined role and responsibilities and a personal development plan which says if I do X, Y and Z to meet A, B and C my salary will then be reviewed to keep it fair and in line with my new experience and responsibilities.

I'm not sure that many companies are actually like that though.

My situation at the moment is slightly different as it's going hand in hand with a promotion. The promotion has been agreed, the formal points have not. Although I have absolutely no doubt that if I don't prompt the discussion, my employer would be more than happy to leave me on my current salary without a second thought.

I managed a 30% pay rise last month. It's very possible, just as long as the company is in a good position, it really does need you, and it costs less than getting someone else in and retrained.

That said, I wouldn't threaten to leave. The worry would kill me.

Exactly, if you make yourself as 'valuable' as possible and cost more and be more hassle if you left then im sure small/mid-sized places would step upto the mark.

I very much doubt (hope!) that the OP won't be going in all guns blazing with an ultimatum.

Would you reach the same decision with an employee who came to you with a reasoned case about why they were worth 20% more than you were currently paying them?
