Been signed off from work as of Tuesday for one week with BPPV. Sicknote runs out Monday so I can return Tuesday.

Bored at home, tablets have worked and I now feel well enough to return. Obviously I cannot get to see a GP to be signed 'fit for work' or whatever. Can I just go back or do I have to wait until I can be signed 'fit'?

I will be losing money if I miss Monday, and am getting further behind with my workload every day I miss.

I did not ask to be signed off - went to GP with symptoms and he immediately signed me off for a week, despite my protests.

All I want is to go back to work!

No, but I do a job where I have to be 'fit' to work - i am BIB - therefore everyone I could ask ie Occupation Health, HR etc all work til 4pm and never answer the phone after 1200 on a Friday.

Been told by a colleague that I am not likely to be insured to work if I am still within the timings of a sicknote. However, we aren't 100% sure. Obviously Bank Holiday on monday is overtime, I am bored at home and want to go back to work rather than sit on my ass bored at home.

Yep - but no HR etc until Tuesday - when sicknote runs out - I want to go back to work tomorrow when my 'rest days' are over and I should be working - dont do swinging the lead - just want to work and earn my money. Got people to arrest and charge, crime to fight etc etc.

10/10 for wanting to get back to work, I know how frustrating it is being stuck at home when you feel ready to go back. BUT, be careful, you may not be covered by insurance if you are signed off with a sick note and some places need to be able to show a return to work form should the worst happen. Best to check with your HR and if that's not possible don't risk it.

This has only happened with one of my staff, he worked in our factory on a piece of machinery and was off work with a (genuine) bad neck after being rear-ended.

The issue was insurance; we potentially would not be covered so decided not to allow him back until the sick note period was finished. This may be different because there was a potential to make the injury worse.

Could you do office work/front desk/light duties?

We had experience of this recently and were advised that if someone was signed off sick, even though they voluntarily wanted to return to work, our employer's liability insurance would be invalid. The staff member in question was given a straight choice between staying away from work or getting a further doctor's note to say she was now fit for work.

Looks like I am now off until Tuesday. No-one could give me a definite answer, and as I got up to my son at 2am, I felt all dizzy and light-headed, so have knocked work on the head until Tuesday. I am annoyed, but want to be better long-term, rather than back today, off tomorrow etc etc. Hoping that I am fit on Tuesday, ideally without medication, although I still have 5 days worth left to take.

As I found out last week - you cannot go back to work now until a Dr has said you are fit to return. Cannot see the Police allowing you to go back to work without one anyway.

I doubt any HR person would risk it.

If your sicknote runs out next Tuesday you may still have to stay off work til you can go back and see the Dr for the return to work note (assuming the Dr has not ticked the box about wanting to see you again).

I have the same issue.
I had a leg abcess operated on the week before last.
Quite a deep wound and left open to heal from the bottom up.
I've just been signed off for another two weeks.

I want to go back to work. I suggested to them that I could come in after the district nurse has done the dressings (they come first thing in the morning).

But they won't let me as the insurance doesn't cover me if I'm signed off frown

You need to get your employers permission to return whilst covered by a sick note.

If your employer thinks it’s not safe for you to return, you will have to stay off work.

You should not go back to work before the end date on your fit note if your GP has advised you that:
•returning to work would be unsafe
•returning to work would be bad for your health

You do not need to see your GP again to be ‘signed back to work’.

There's no such thing as a sick note any more. It's a fit note and should allow you to discuss with your employer and doctor under what circumstances you can return
