Tips for a good cover note

Asit says above really, I am looking to apply for a new job but am having trouble cracking the cover note to go with my cv. I know it would be better to keep it short and sweet but am having trouble saying what I want to say concisely.

Can anybody help me with this? would really appreciate any examples, recommendations etc
