Just been told i'm the one from our team to be made redundant.

I've only been with the company since last November, so know my rights are limited.

The payout being offered is pretty good considering my length of service - however the selection criteria has not been shown to us - we've just been told it is a combination of discipline, attendance (sickness) performance and length of service.

Basically i fall down on the length of service.

Should I just sign the sheet they have waved in front of me today and take the money and start job hunting or is there anything further i can do?

Cheers

Dan

If I were you I'd take the money and run, with that length of service you're lucky to get anything over statutory IMHO.

I was also told yesterday that after 15 years service, i am to be made redundant within the next 12 to 18 months! It kinda hits you hard especially when my department is still extremely busy & have so much experience. Some have been offered positions in Germany but i don't fancy that at all.
What can i do if anything?

This. May not be what you want to hear, but it will be the best option open I'm afraid. The quicker you move on, the better IMO.

They havn't tried to blame it on the economical downturn, they basically want our site to relocate to Germany full stop.

Just wanted to check no-one felt I had any other options.

Yep. Where I work(ed - in my last week thank god) the trend is to try to do you out of your statutory rights (untaken holidays etc), let alone anything else above it

fair enough, you've a better chance of finding employment late next year though, I've been looking around now and my recruitment guy has said he's off travelling until next June as he's not placed anyone for the last 6 weeks

it's dire out there at the moment

I *thought* (obviously incorrectly!) that only a job role could be made redundant.. not a person.

Thats what is happening - the team of 16 of us all do the same thing - but there will only be 15 roles doing the job after the end of this month.

So we have one to many people for the roles available.

it is - they reduce the number of roles, say from 4 to 3

4 candidates so they whittle the group down to 3

second time round for me in 4 months rolleyes

Now there's a man with a plan..

I would say that you are lucky to get offered anything, take it and get looking. Good luck to all those on the cusp of unemployment..

I'd bite their arm off. Sign the papers, let them commit to losing you after 18 months. There's a good chance that if you keep cracking on, they'll change their minds knowing that they'll lose all that experience and have to pay you out a small fortune.

Good luck though.

Length of service as selection criteria can be debatable and could fall under the Age Discrimination boundaries. To be honest, if the offer is good, you get full notice, then I would take it. Ask for any outplacement assistance and agree in principal what time they will give you during working hours to look for another role.

No placements in 6 weeks? Unless he is a retained/large placement fee recruiter then there might not be a job to come back to!

Keep talking to them about proposed dates, when they will firm up. Do you have a critical role and could you negotiate a retention bonus?

Don't forget, if your expected redundancy date is in 12 months time but you leave in 9 months then you will potentially lose all your entitlement to redundancy payment unless you have had a date confirmed and they agree to you leaving.
