If it's like any sort of invitation to an assessment centre, you should be sent out details of what the test will involve - why not ask the ECITB if you're in any doubt, after all you did proactively seek an apprenticeship with them. It'll most likely be an assessment of maths, engineering knowledge and written communication.

We use tests to help assess potential apprentices. They consist of a mathematical test and an English written communication test. They provide an idea of your ability in arithmetic and spelling.
There are a whole range of such test available, the ones for apprentices tend to be fairly basic, whereas the ones I have used for jobs such as train drivers are much more complex, including mechanical reasoning.
If the invitation doesn't explain what type of test you will be taking, then there is nothing wrong with giving the centre a call and asking them what to expect.
Good luck

Want my honest opinion? Don't go into engineering, especially as an apprentice unless you're then going for a degree for design etc.
Why's that then?At our place most of the senior engineers don't have degrees (very large company).
One day when this country realises that we have lost the ability to design and make things engineers might finally be appreciated.

Think you've answered your own question. There's, shall we say, more stable options for a career. I've done ok I suppose but looking back I'd have never have done it. I'd have been a civil servant, (Nurse, Teacher etc.) something with a pension or just gone out and tried my luck at my own business.dfen5 said:

Might be worth looking for firm that will employee you as a trainee etc , pay you to get a degree and give you placement work in the holidays -if any firms like that still exist Ok so I recived a letter which said 'following your recent attendance at the HETA testing session I am pleased to adivse you that you have been successful at securing a place in the next phase of the recuitment process'
I have to attend an outdoor team building session and workshop assesment day, what is this going to be like ?
Thanks The Joker.

Sounds like you'll be doing the old 'get across this crocodile infested radioactive swamp using only 2 ropes, a barrel and some planks' mularkey, plus maybe a some other outdoorsy stuff like raft building. The ostensible purpose is to discover if you can 'play nice' with other people and are not an axe murder, malcontent, or irredeemably socially disfunctional. It's often a load of bo11ocks and some folk take it too seriously, but if the weather is nice you'll enjoy it. Do your best and have fun; the assessors will be able to spot if you are an arrse or an ideal candidate, there's no point in pretending to be what you aren't.I have to attend an outdoor team building session and workshop assesment day, what is this going to be like ?

The workshop bit is probably more of the same, only indoors; you're given a paper problem as a team (you have to rescue your mate who's being swept out to sea, but there's a kitten stuck up a tree, which is also on fire; what do you do first?) and discuss possible solutions, and hopefully reach an answer you all agree to.
The main thing about these things is to follow any instructions you're given and try to work as a team. Having done stuff like this before, there's nothing the assessors want to see less than your team solving a problem different to the one given, or blundering around like freshly castrated cattle, with everyone giving orders and noone listening(too many chiefs, no indians).
Im applying to engineering apprenticeships at the moment, so could be different. But iv been told I may be getting too old if i leave it much longer, im only 19 for fs! But its something to do with the funding getting cut by up to 75% so it would be only big companies that would even consider me quite soon apparently.
