Due to the lull in the housing market and imminent redundacies I'm seriously considering working overseas for a year or two to ensure the mortgage is covered and to hopefully bag a chunk of savings.

I work as a technical manager in residential construction so there is demand in Dubai and Abu Dabi etc, but the take home isn't much better than I earn here so would rather go somewhere less hospitable for more money. The question is where?

Iraq and Afganistan pay very well, but you work pretty much in a bunker. This isn't really a problem if it's ultimately safe, but I understand that the problem is getting to and from a safe place. I could be completely wrong though.

I'd ideally like an unsavoury location in a high-pressure role where my time is consumed by work and is rewarded with a fat cheque each month. If I'm going to be away from my family it needs to be really worthwhile.

So, does anyone have any advice on the locations and/or companies/agencies to try or good websites?

Cheers

Listen mate i'm for one minute trying to put you off (ok maybe just a little) but we sell broadcast stuff all the time to Afganistan and Iraq. Anyway a customer came to us who was basically an installer and buying these and selling them to the british goverment.

He went to Iraq for a few days and when he came back he said 'never again!' it was such a scary place it was untrue. the bodyguards cannot be there 24/7. he made a pile of money out of it though but for the risks involved he wouldn't do it again.

Sorry if i'm lecturing you a bit but i wouldn't go that place for all the tea in China, however that is only from what i've been told. there might be other people on here that have had a different experience.

I've heard mixed reviews. Some are very harsh involviing regular kidnappings and others had a great time and didn't now what all the fuss was about.

I suppose it really does depend on the area.

There's no point going if I come back in a bag so I will weigh it up very carefully.

Other options are desolate but safe corners of the planet, but I'm not sure where to start.

OK. Time to give this a nudge as they're laying off here now.

So, where are the construction hotspots around the globe now and does anyone have any contacts in Dubai, Abu Dabhi, China etc?

Cheers
