Hi, I'm about to commence networking for new employment and thought i'd post something on here as recall a lot of people on here being in the know and also in I.T.

My skillset is in I.T. (MSI Application Packager) so i'm after names of "Heads of IT" for companies in the South East or London. Its always good to have a name rather than just addressing it to HR.

Please pm the details or any leads if anyone has any? It will be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Toby

Cheers for the link.

Need a list of large Blue Chip companies in the Brighton area to target for possible contracts. Anyone know of any that are not outsourced and worth working for ?

Toby,

I admire your enthusiasm, but how many "Heads of IT" in "large blue chip companies" are going to be interested in an MSI packager? It is a commodity skill these days.

I'm not belittling your skills (hell, I can't do it!), but you are likely to be a few rungs down the ladder. I would suggest you target a few recruitment agencies and some of the likely big MSI users - so those who blue chips outsource to.

Target those you know are doing large desktop migrations and the like.

If you're serious about it, then I would also spread your net much wider than Brighton.

Do you have anything that will differentiate you from other packagers? Specific application experience, platform experience, other skills? Or can you step up and talk at board level about application provisioning strategy?

A lot of the projects I lead / get involved in have requirements for packagers, and the work is definitely out there. What would sell you to me is:

- approach
- differentiators
- experience

If you are contracting then you need to sell your services, and make sure you stand out.

Thanks for the advice, all advice is very much appreciated as I am new to contacting after many years in permanent roles. I was hoping to use this approach to cut out company HR depts by addressing letters directly to the people heading the IT depts. I was targeting local companies to be pro-active with the view of them maybe keeping me in mind for future work as and when it comes up. I agree that many managers would probably just pass on the letter to HR or even file it under B1n. I have also been liasing with recruitment agencies and have registered with some of them.

God I hate this word 'networking' as used in this context. One of those fashionable phrases that everyone uses that's full of as much BS as so many other phrases used these days... YUK!!

...HR depts...
As a contractor the chances of you going anywhere near an HR dept are very slim. You are not an employee. You are a supplier of services, and all the organisation you supply services to is interested in is: 1. Do they need your service? 2. Are you better / cheaper / faster than your competitors?

A few of your posts have stated you plan on contracting...can I ask why you are choosing this option rather than permanent employment?

I have chosen to test the water as contractor after many years as a permie. I would like to see whether the contracting environment works for me giving me as it would give greater flexibility of where I work and also the greater income.
