There's a couple of guys on YouTube who post videos of their trade plate delivery trials and tribulations.

My friend, near Daventry, does this for a specific car driver company. He told me that he meets a lot of BCA drivers but that their T&Cs aren't as good as the company he works for so maybe see if their are other companies doing this.

He does big miles and makes around £550 p/w. No/minimal finding your own way home and its a real no brainer job but that suits him.

Worst part is EVs. Finding chargers and hanging around while they charge is a real PITA apparently.

How does it work... They pay you per miles? and give you an allowance for returning?

Tbh if I was retired I'd do it for free - get to drive different cars all around the UK, what's not to like?

Depends on the outfit but from what I understood (my uncle looked into this a few years ago as a possible post-retirement thing) many just pay a rate for driving the car A to B; travel at the start and end of the gig was self-funded or came out of the rate you were paid for driving the car. Maybe some of the bigger outfits did pay a travel subsidy but from what he told me, that was rare.

His mate was trying to sell him the idea of doing it, but when they went through the sums, the average monthly income would be roughly equal to minimum wage, and often long days depending on your pick-up and drop off locations.

Watching some of the videos on YouTube, one of the most common questions asked in the comments is: You've done XX hours door to door and are getting less than minimum wage for it. Should they pay you more? Most of the time the YouTuber doesn't validate their time/cost/hourly wage.

To be fair the min wages is not bad these days and it might be better than doing other min wages jobs, but you do make a good point.

Why would it be any more than minimum wage? It’s not exactly hard.

Lol. Try doing it.

Done it for years for Essex dealers and most wouldn't even consider it.

Recent one was a rush end of month job, after a day out in the truck, went home in London, bath. dinner and drove through the night to Inverness, 5 hours hanging about for a flight back to London, then you still have to get home. 36 hours after getting up.

You think its easy lol ?

I've got better things to do than sit on the M6 in a Nissan Juke.

It requires unskilled labour, someone with a lot of free time and needs a few extra quid. It's easy compared to a whole raft of jobs, just time consuming for little money.

Our local ones for BCA just pick up end-of-lease cars. All older gents, get dropped off at customer in a mini bus drive back to the storage field. Rinse and repeat. The only lease i've had where is was delivered to me, the driver had to make his own way back on the train. I dropped him off at the station, although I can imagine some customers won't.

Maybe a folding bike in the boot would be an option if healthy enough to use one to get to the nearest transport.

The customer sometimes.

The hours

Getting transport links.

ste motors needing to go hundreds of miles.

Getting your expenses back.

Its a lonely place at times

Driving standards and traffic

Spending a lot on food and drink .

Avoiding damage more than with your own car

But I still love doing it, not for minimum wage though. Not a fking hope.

I was thinking that, it would be a great job when you've retired. I'd want paying though

Got to love those that comment with no clue lol.

Try it yourself and see how unskilled you are. You wouldn't last a week.

Driving other people's pride and joy, fresh from the dealership, hundreds of miles , needs no skill?

For a start, vehicle inspection before setting off is a skill needed.
If you can see issues the customer will, and no point creating problems for yourself.

Customer service skills are required too.

Yes, a donkey can jump in a vehicle and drive it where it needs to go, but they won't last long if they get it wrong.

I was thinking if you’re retired/unemployed and enjoy cars/driving. I’m happy to drive anything and (I’m guessing) most days you won’t be stuck on the M6.

Horses for courses I guess. I’d hate to be a HGV driver or work for the likes of Evri but people do it.

Yep, all jobs have negative elements. Some will look at these jobs and think its fine and others won't.

If I was retired, I'd do this kind of job on an as and when needed, cherry picking jobs.

Car to Edinburgh for example I could then have a day or so there and work my way home, so using it as an opportunity for short breaks
