Backround - currently in a job I hate, and have been trying to move back to my old job in the same company for 6 months:

- now I have a job offer for my old role within my current company, where I have been for 7 years, but have now also been offered another job at another company doing the same thing

The new company is £50k, a better car, (Tesla, polestar, i4) pension is only 3% vs current company 7%, private healthcare, and other perks, generious commission scheme where you get 10% of anything you upsell to customers

Current company is £40k, 7% pension, worse company car (mg5, Renault scenic) commission is £100 per job you sell regardless of the value.

The roles are the same job, both companies are global building automation firms so not like going to a one man band but I am terrified of leaving a company I’ve been at for 7/8 years

Working hours are the same

I had 2 interviews with the new company and it sounds excellent but I don’t have many issues with my current company and only applied externally as the internal transfer process was handled so badly and has taken 4 months to get to offer stage.

Any advice on leaving a company? I know people do it all the time!

If you are happy with the new company and confident then leave... its quickest way to get better pay rises, plus the commission alone seems good vs £100... if you take what you got last year and converted it to the new company, how much would that have been?

Bad side... they only put in 3%.

Im not seeing the costs outweighing the benefits here on moving.

Have you told your current employer about the external offer, just in case they might be willing to improve their own offer?

It's usually a PITA when an experienced employee leaves and you have to backfill / recruit. Sometimes it' makes more sense to improve the package you're offering.

It’s really not surprising you’re terrified - you’ve already been in your old company far too long.

I guess it depends on whether you want to be one of those people you get in all companies that are there doing pretty much the same thing year after year and are valued less and less with the passing of time.

How do the figures actually compare? I read the new company as offering 10% on anything your upsell? This is not the same as 10% on all sales. Only the OP can make that determination by comparing the bonus numbers for a given level of sales.

Pension difference of 4% is quite significant, although as others pointed out you can lift your percentage to compensate. Another point on pensions is who is the provider? Some are better than others.

Cars - a more valuable car = more BIK tax, eroding the pay increase again. Obviously nicer to have though!

I'd definitely be moving. Not only is the overall package better, but the breadth of experience will enhance your CV for any future moves.

It’s 10% on the total, so at my current company if I identified something the customer ordered and it was £3000 I would get £100, but at the new company I would get £300

Bik- current company the EVs on offer are a bit crap snd not really suitable so would end up going petrol, so higher bik for a worse car, such as a Skoda Octavia where as the new company I could get a m3 long range or a enyaq 85 with the range I need.


The new company is a no brainer really but I’m just so stuck in my comfort zone having only ever had 2 jobs and both are at the same company

Leave.

I was in a similar situation recently. I was offered 2 roles internally, both sideways moves and no pay increase.

Went external, found a better company and a 20% uplift on pay, better role and more chance of progression.

I was at the old place for 10 years which was far too long tbh.

Unless there’s any warning signs about company stability/longevity I’d leave.

In all honesty it seems as though you know the answer but you are looking for people to convince you to stay comfortable….

With the £10k increase in basic and 4% less salary deduction - your a good 25-30% better off…

Factor in a bigger bonus and a nicer car - it’s a struggle to see why you would stay.

I could understand if you said the vibe was off or you have had bad stories etc… but you said it seems excellent!

Barring there not being something you’ve missed.. like a horror commute…

My notice would have already been in!

It’s a mobile role so no horror commute, I’m just so stuck in my comfort zone I needed the virtual slap to get myself out of it I think!

If they were both external jobs I would be taking the 50k one as a no brainer!

If you can get the new company to agree you can pay for the pension by Salary Sacrifice & better still add the Employer's NI they will save to their pension contribution it will go a long way to making up the difference.

External for me, I was at previous employer 16 years, various promotions but salary mediocre.

Left in 2021 now earn £23k more basic, much more bonus (£20k this year to £4k previous best at old employer) same industry same jobs (BD)

I'm now leaving this employment to go to another competitor in the same field and have 3 months PILON and start the new job August with more basic and earning potential. Downside is slightly less pension (5 & 5 v current 4 & 7) car allowance is slightly less but a fresh start is what I feel I need.

I was so scared about leaving my last employer and turned out best thing I did.

It's all a game someone told me not long ago, we got to work to pay bills in the main so go where pays you the most without the grief!
