My daughter is a newly qualified nurse but is finding that there a very few nursing jobs going. Apparently she is far from alone, many of the people on her course are also having similar problems.

I assume this is a funding issue as most people assume that we need more nurses in the NHS. The encouragement to get more people to go through training looks a little pointless if we can't afford to employ them.

Hmmm that does surprise me, like you I assumed there was a huge demand for nurses.

My 15yo daughter wants to be a nurse but is probably going to struggle to get the grades to go to uni so is hoping to do one of the healthcare apprenticeship things or some access course to get in. We were very supportive of this approach, thinking it’s a secure long term career - we’ll always need nurses right? scratchchin

The NHS is being filled up with cheap Asian labour, homegrown is too expensive these days.

Totally untrue. The NHS pay structure means those support workers or qualified staff get paid the same. There is no difference on which country you come from.

I suspect some of it is location specific; my son in law (North Kent) is just coming to the end of his course and was chased by three departments to commit to going with them. He went with Oncology which was the whole reason he started down this path (after years as a carer) so it’s really worked out well for him. As a mature male nurse he is in a vast minority and whilst it shouldn’t make a difference it clearly has.

One of the trusts I work for have an absolute freeze on recruitment in non patient facing jobs and a case by case vetting and authorising of recruitment in clinical roles, including replacements for staff who leave.

A family member is a foundation2 medic, and out of the 45 f2s in their group only 1 has a training post for after august. 12 month fixed term non specialist training roles are attracting hundred of applications in hours, meaning that unless you submit an application within an hour or so of the job opening you wont get shortlisted

I have seen a number of final year AHP students on placement recently. None of them have an NHS job lined up for when they are qualified in July

Sounds like there will be a lot of well educated Barristas in the summer

Its a bit of a mess

Interesting, the view appears to be that it may get better after April.

She qualified in Southampton but has moved in with her boyfriend who has a settled teacher job in Clacton. I was a bit concerned that this may limit her options - probably not helping.

My wife’s friends ( nurse ) daughter has newly qualified as a nurse , she has had to take a job 30 miles away , not good when you do a 12 hr shift then do a apx hour commute to work & home , a couple of times she’s pulled over & slept for a hour / two in a lay-by on the way home , she lives at home .
As for above about it not being true about African / Asian people doing the jobs , there being paid the same but there obviously taking the vacancies , which is fine but when the vacancies are filled your a newly qualified nurse starting out is going to struggle to get a job ( my info comes from wife ( nhs manager) , daughter nhs nurse , sister nhs nurse ) .
According to our local labour mp all this is being looked at , yes you need immigration but not the open borders policy started by the tories , or you can have a open borders policy but then it will impact on the op daughter or my wife’s friends daughter , hopefully labour get it right

Daughter did a diploma instead of a degree as she failed her maths , she then took a job at the local hospital as a housekeeper & easily passed her maths at college , she was then asked I believe to do the diploma , been nursing now for apx 15 yrs
I don’t think the diploma exists now , but daughter is a example of what can be achieved even with failed exams , she was devastated at the time , but all the nurses said she was a natural when doing housekeeping , they all pushed her to do the diploma .

My wife is nhs manager ( ex nurse ) , she’s always saying she fancies a change , plenty to do in London .
We own a large 3 bed semi with large garden in the East Midlands , last valuation was £180,000 , what would the equivalent house in London cost us ? . Thankyou , any recommendations of where to buy ? .

A shoebox. Rightmove will guide you but you won't get a house at £180k or close, let alone one with a garden.

When the mask slips. Imagine walking round with this type of attitude and feeling confident expressing it in public, despite it being fundamentally wrong.
