Hi All

My employer is offering to release me two days a year to undertake a volunteer role.

Anyone done this? I’m looking for ideas/inspiration, as it seems difficult to just volunteer for a day or two. Most require a greater commitment which I just cannot currently offer.

I’m very technical, but would turn my hand to most things. Would really love to help people directly in some way.

London based.

Cheers.

I've done a number in a former job many moons ago. They were all organised by the company themselves and made available to employees. Have done garden renovation in a hospice, refreshed a school playground & the last one was decorating a building.

I also did two charity bike rides, 110 mile tour from Lands end to Plymouth and another through Devon & Cornwall.

The current place I contract at has numerous days out litter picking, painting and stuff like that.

Hope that helps

Now there’s a few ideas, thanks very much.

I might reach out to a local hospice.

Like you we get two days.

This year one of my days was spent helping to set up the field for the local car show, proceeds of which were going going to local charities and the air ambulance.

I spent the day putting up heras fencing, gazebos banners, cutting back hedges and generally doing anything I could do to help the organisers.

Where I used to live there was a Repair Cafe that people could take broken things and people with diagnostic and repair skills could fix them. Repair Cafe

I would love to turn up with a Triumph Stag or an NSU Ro80, and say the engine is making a funny noise.

During Covid, the Royal Voluntary Service launched a Responder app where you can help your community in various ways. I spent a the Covid summer fetching prescriptions, shopping and later driving people to appointments as I was only required at work for 2 days a week. I think for driving jobs you have to have a DBS, but they pay for that.

Greenpower Education Trust are always looking for volunteers to help run their events... helping with scrutineering of the cars and marshalling etc... they have events across the country so should have a few in your area!
