Working for BT
Discussion
What’s it like to work for BT these days?
I’m interested in an engineering role I’ve seen with the BT Networks division.
I heard and read a fair bit about BT being full of managers who have little to no technical experience?
There are also discussions/rumours of a BT group takeover at some point by the Germans.
Also job cuts ongoing and more to come over the coming years.
With all of that in mind, is BT still a good place to work and to advance one’s career?

I work with them in a roundabout way.
Just so you know that they have reached the top of the hill on the fiber rollout, Within 2 years they are going to let engineers go as they won't be needed.
When I do have to work with them, They make slow decisions but they don't mind spending a few quid to get the right results.
But once management pull the plug your shut down pretty quickly.
I worked mostly with the media & broadcast part of the company.

Thanks. I was aware of the fibre engineers likely to lose their jobs in the next few years. The role I’m looking at isn’t directly involved with that area of the business.Just so you know that they have reached the top of the hill on the fiber rollout, Within 2 years they are going to let engineers go as they won't be needed.

I worked for them for over 10 years in a technical roll in a team delivering Cisco UC solutions
I was working in a great team with good manager who was also technical
It’s a large company so I think it’s very dependent on the team you are in
Exactly this. I've no direct experience working for BT but it's going to be no different from every other big company....there are good, bad and indifferent managers and good, bad and indifferent units in which to work. You'll only get an idea if you can meet/chat with some of the folks, or the manager, during the selection/interview process.I was working in a great team with good manager who was also technical
