W Mids student placement - anyone arty want a free worker?
Discussion
My eldest is studying fine art. This term she is supposed to be doing a work placement - starting in about 2 weeks. The students are supposed to organise their placements themselves
She contacted the university archives in June to ask if they'd take her on. She is very seriously considering becoming an archivist and you have to have a couple of hundred hours of work experience in order to apply to the postgraduate training. Initially the archive team let her come as a general volunteer, but she's only done the induction so far because it took a long time to get it signed off by HR.
In the meantime she asked if the volunteering could be converted into a formal placement and in November it looked like they'd agreed to do this (there's a fairly extensive email trail). As no paperwork then came through at the start of term, she chased and has now been told that HR have put their foot down as the placement should have been advertised 'open call' and the offer has unfortunately been rescinded. If she wants it, she'll have to wait for it to be advertised and apply and be interviewed alongside anyone else who answers the advert. This is a bit ste: the placement only exists because she did the initial legwork and also because she's autistic and struggles with things like interviews.
She now only has two weeks to finalise a placement, and they've not even got to advertising it yet. She's already approached another arts organisation in Brum over the weekend, but can't use anywhere she's already worked at according to the uni, which means that her options are a little limited. So I wondered if there are any art/design people on here who might be interested in a free workhorse for 70 hours or more from Feb - April. She's got her own car, is a bloody hard worker, is computer literate and can travel to pretty much anywhere in Brum, Cov, Leamington or Warwick. She's got experience of volunteering at galleries and archives - all arranged herself off her own back. So far her main areas are illustration, painting and printmaking, but she's also been taking metalwork and woodwork electives.

I can't offer anything myself, but has she tried the Warwickshire County Record Office? https://heritage.warwickshire.gov.uk/workexperienc...
If Warwickshire doesn't pan out, get her to look at the neighbouring counties. They will all have similar facilities.
They're fascinating places. I was doing a photo shoot at the Essex Records Office the other week. They have a document that dates back to 948AD - a parchment confirming the transfer of land ownership, maps that date back to the middle ages, stacks of art, much if which is in need of repair or renovation.
As an aside, an interesting fact I learned.... I was remarking on the number of portraits they held. Most were of past Essex Authority luminaries; High Sherifs, Lords and the like. I remarked jokingly that this was the age of the ego - commissioning grand portraits of one's self. But they actually served a practical purpose. Pre-photography, there was no way anyone would know what someone looked like. So, ahead of a visit to a town or village, a portrait would be displayed in a prominent location so the locals knew that the person claiming to be the High Sheriff was in fact, the High Sheriff.
