Voluntary Redundancy
Discussion
A friend has been offered the chance to apply for VR, and given the terms are quite generous he's keen to take it up. He's got a form to complete, which other than name, staff id etc just has a space for 'comments'. For those that know how this process works, what sort of things should be mentioned to increase his chances of being successful?
"I am a terrible employee and you'd be better off without me"
If it is a company of any decent size then I doubt anything on the comments section would help/hinder the request.
When there has been VR at my workplace (v large multinational) there's several steps between expressing an interest and actually leaving, with both parties having a chance to block the deal.
Usually it comes down to how easily can the people be replaced in their role (especially if it can be by someone lower down the payscale).

I would be very surprised if the employer doesn’t have a very clear idea of which employees they would hope to retain and which they would be happy to see go.
I doubt the comments will make much difference. The number of other people asking to go will have more impact for example. If it’s the type of role where a good handover will be beneficial it might be worth emphasising willingness to do that well.

Apparently some have been told they are being made redundant and some have been asked if they want it. He's been told he can request it. No idea how many people are going nor how many are likely to apply. The handover comment makes sense, thank youI doubt the comments will make much difference. Sounds very much like the emails I got yesterday, I'm guessing your friend also works for a company with a blue eagle. worldwidewebs said:

"Radbroke hall is a dump" ought to workSome years ago, I was at risk of redundancy, 45 people out of 450 in our site, 7700 out of 77000 worldwide.
2 out of 5 in my department. I hadn't been there 2 years, so before any decisions were made we were all invited to apply for redundancy. What we'd get was written down carefully on paper..
If you are selected for redundancy you will get £zero, because you haven't been here 2 years.
If you apply for voluntary redundancy and we agree to this we will double this to £zero
If you are selected for redundancy you will leave the same day, and we will continue to pay you in lieu of notice for 3 months, on your usual pay date. After this date we will pay your redundancy (zero)
If you apply for VR and we accept it, you will work your 3 months notice, and then we will pay your redundancy (zero × 2)

I've volunteered for redundancy twice. Both times multinational IT companies looking to shed 10 to 20%.
First step was group consultation meetings, then a phone call to HR to express interest and request the figures in writing.
Then simply a case of signing to accept the terms and waiting for the day.
All very straightforward, and AFAIK everyone who volunteered got it.
I also got compulsory redundancy once. Only 7 months service, so just one month's notice plus 2 weeks' salary ex gratia.
