I'll keep this vague...

I've been working at my current company for 2 years. The job wasn't exactly what I wanted but I needed work so I took it and threw myself into it. It's been ok but I'm having doubts about how the company operates so want to move on.

A colleague, who became a mate, moved on last year to another company and really speaks highly of it. Of course he's still in the honeymoon period with them...

I applied for one job with this other company, quickly had an initial interview and have two more interviews for it lined up. The job is interesting but I've never seen anything else like it. I always wonder what I could do if they made me redundant in a couple of years time.

Last night I noticed they have just advertised another job that I would be really interested in. And it's more generic in that I could move on from it easily enough if it came to pass. It's also what I really want to do.

I think I've got a good chance of getting the first job but am less likely to get the second job.

Question is whether it would look odd to also put in an application to the second job or if that would scupper my chances with both jobs?

I regularly have applicants apply for multiple vacancies with my employer. Sometimes these vacancies are all with me as hiring manager and sometimes various different hiring managers across the business.
We try to avoid multiple interviews to streamline the process for both parties.

Depends how organised and joined up they are.

But as a hiring manager for x it would annoy me for you to go for y, if you were good. The hr manager, on the other hand, would be more agnostic. Do you have a contact you could actually speak to? Is it the same HR bod referenced? .

Yes.

I recently applied for three positions with the same company and was selected for interview.

When the topic about me applying for three slightly different roles was raised by the interviewing panel, I stated that all three would be positions that I would be interested in.

Unfortunately what was offered wasn’t enough to make me jump ship.

In a nutshell, I’d say don’t worry about it and apply for both positions.

Thanks for the quick replies. Don't you have better things to do on a Saturday afternoon? biggrin

It's a different HR person but it might be the same hiring manager. At the first interview he did ask why I was interested in A while referencing all my knowledge and experience of B!

I have a good relationship with the HR bod so I'll try to ring her on Monday and get the lie of the land.

We often get people applying for different posts at my place. In general, and as long as the applicant has the right skill-sets, we see it as a good thing as it demonstrates a desire to work for us.
