Like many (it seems) on here, I am being made redundant. Currently in the midst of negotiating a settlement and securing my visa status (non UK) whilst trying not to panic unduly.

Whilst I am not required to work my notice. I think the best approach is to start looking immediately. However it’s been 12yrs since I last wrote a comprehensive CV and my linkedin profile looks like someone who has severely neglected it.

Pretty sure there is a PHer recommended for CV writing services? Not looking for a free service, I need something that will lend itself to the modern recruitment process whilst expanding beyond my current field of work (mid level project/power engineering). I just can’t remember the chap’s name.

Any ideas or other recommendations?

Ask your company if they will provide outplacement service as part of the redundancy. There a firms out there who specialise in helping people in your situation (long time out of the job market and suddenly forced back into it) with this kind of thing. We offer it as a standard part of the redundancy process but it isn’t a legally mandated thing so possible your company won’t have anything, but worth asking.

Do a bit of research and get clued up about ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software which is what recruiters use these days to automatically sift and triage CVs in job applications before a human ever reads them.

The days of having "a" CV are over, and you need to be prepared to tweak and target your CV specifically for each job application to try and beat the bots and get your application infront of a human being.

This is largely a myth, there are very very few companies using an ATS capable of sorting CVS in response to job description criteria.

I totally agree having a good CV is a requirement, but this idea that AI is sorting CVs is not true (yet)

It's not AI (AI seems to be the current buzzword for everything in technology at the moment). It's just software that can hang off an email inbox that can parse emails and attachments and do simple triaging and filtering on keywords and integrate with a CRM system (or be the CRM itself). Stuff like Zoho Recruit, Bullhorn, iCIMS and Lever. Plus the one I wrote myself for a client. Definitely not a myth.

More simply, the recruiters are unlikely to have any detailed technical knowledge so will have a list of words to look out for in the c.v. I would recommend including the names of industry software that you have expertise in. Also, do not forget qualifications. I have landed phone screens and interviews because of a certificate I gained in a couple of hours. Without it, I would not have been in consideration.

I have used ChatGPT to help with content but it is only as good as the info you put in, and the prompts you use. It can take a lot of work to get something back that is useable, or just a starting point for your own work.

Finally, in my industry, at the level I am at and with the very niche skills I have, the only way of getting a job is through my network.

I am still going with myth, because the tech is not used in the way you might think. If 60 people apply for a position we are hiring, then 60 CVs get read by the recruitment team.

If we open a role, we might search in the database of existing candidates/profiles for matches and this is where search criteria and sorting are mostly used.

For context I have worked in recruitment / search for more than 15 years then in house for some major FMCGs and have installed 3 ATS systems at companies.

The reality is very very few companies have anything more sophisticated that word search or parsing. Naturally we filter and reject candidates based on a number of criteria (eg work permit/location) but almost all CVs are still read by MK1 eyeball (though probably for not more than 6 - 10 seconds before a first decision is taken)

We have Icims...
