I'm trying to figure this out and it's made my head mushy...

I served my resignation on Monday, technicaly I am on three months notice but I have asked to leave a week early as my new employer only has one induction day in December that I wouldn't make in time if I served the full three months.

I'm owed about 8/9 days holiday once pro-rata'd for my time served this year versus holiday year.

So would it be better for my contract to terminate one week earlier, take annual leave for the last week of 3 month notice period or does it not make a material difference at all?

I'm thinking largely in terms of final pay packet.

I'd just resign, let the current firm give you the termination day, ask for vacation days accrued to be paid in cash and throw a sickie on the induction day for the new company. What's the downside?

To maximise your earnings - work your full 3 month's notice. Take a day's annual leave for the induction day. Finish at your current employer on the Friday and start with new place on the Monday and ask to be paid for untaken accrued leave

And remember your last day of work is on the Sunday with new start date on the Monday, do this so if you got knocked down over over the weekend you would still get dead in service payment from the old company - well your other half would

Take it as annual leave. You will be paid pension contributions during annual leave and accrue holiday and get any other benefits, whereas pay in lieu of notice is just your pay (and dependant on your contract may be less than usual if you receive a bonus or commission).
