Good Afternoon.

I have been receiving a lot of e mails like this.

Replace Ultrasound with other specialities and different companies.

Now for my work E mail I’ve seen a lot of these but these are coming to personal e mails.
I wonder if these companies scan job sites and they have picked out my personal e mail from my CV ?

Hope all is well.

I am getting in touch from Dialectica; we are an information services firm that connects our clients (typically institutional investors and advisory firms) with industry contacts when they are looking to learn more around a new market or sector.

We're currently supporting a client team conducting a market study hoping to better understand the best practices in the Ultrasound market. The team wishes to run an online survey with professionals who are involved with procuring these types of equipment to gather some quantitative data & personal views. I came across your details online and based on your experience I believe that you are a great fit for this project.

Might you have a few minutes to properly explain to you the project's details and introduce you to our remuneration model as well?

I get quite a few of these (some of which have turned out to be fairly lucrative) but I think they just found me on LinkedIn and scatter-gunned everyone and anyone with similar past experience.

I've consulted with dialectica on more than one occasion. They paid well.

So morally I guess if it’s my personal time and e mail it’s not effecting work ?!

You will (usually) be given a very strict set of guidelines regarding what you can and cannot discuss, and anything to do with your current employer is usually very strictly off the table, and you will usually do it in your own time.

You will be calling on your personal industry knowledge and previous experience. What that's worth in terms of price is for you to set - they will ask you how much you charge per hour, so be armed with a figure that (if you were to go and consult as a freelancer) you would think your level of knowledge and experience would be worth to someone. My advice - don't be shy!

I got something similar from Dialectica, I think the offer was $100 an hour (probably varies depending on how specialist/ relevant your skillset is), signed up and put my availability on the tracker etc, but nothing came from it and I didn't get any feedback about why not so I've just been deleting similar requests since then. I got the feeling they're very energetic about getting you signed up so you count as part of their offer when they're pitching for work, but after that they couldn't care less.

I think over time most of these consulting companies build up a list of who has the skills/experience but also who responds promptly etc. Also, you can usually save all your details within their portal so when responding you just copy and paste most of it!

I have probably 'won' less than half of the jobs I respond to, but last year I saw about $800 over the year and some years it's been over $1,000. It's not a fortune, but it's worth a few hours of my time here and there to pay for some tyres!
