$900k for an AI / machine learning role
So what kind of background do you need for these types of AI / ML jobs? I presume a strong stats background, and being able to code in python etc for machine learning? Is this what you'd call a data scientist?

If I were hiring for this, the best candidate would have a good knowledge of stats and I think being able to implement it efficiently would be less important. IMO those should be done by two different people anyway because they are very different skills, especially if they also want someone very senior who can talk to people and understand their problems (a third key skill).
It's not a salary either - it's a package and will have lots of stock-based compensation in it.
People in large tech firms can earn considerable sums of money, as they work in a business helping generate large sums of money!
I'd much rather have a more level, fairer world myself but hot skills are hot at the moment. Always been the way.

That’s not what they’re after with that salary. They’re after one of the world leading experts in the field. It’s not going to be a normal position by any stretch of the imagination. CheesecakeRunner said:

The point of my comment was that some people can make very good models that describe the data well (eg me) and other people can make that same model run faster/cheaper in a production environment (which is not me). You can be a world leading expert in either but they are different skills. Some people might be world leading experts in both, but I think it's less common. Mr Penguin said:
It's a lot of money to create a recommended programme list based on past viewing . lizardbrain said:
Maybe also a bit of USA being a much richer country than UK.
Average salary
Doctor - 230k
Lawyer - 180k
nurse - 40 an hour
presumably the average google engineer salary in London is six figures? (no idea) If so it's not hard to imagine salary approaching half a million in Bay Area.
The lower end of the range isn't unusual at all, software devs and ML people make huge sums of money in America, AFAIK it's around a quarter of a million for a fresh PhD graduate at FAANG companies.Average salary
