Looking around for my next move at the moment and despite decades of marketing experience including more digital experience than most, I feel like marketing is a young persons discipline and I'd be seen, at 54, as just being a bit old for it.

I did wonder if this experience would be good for teaching it (I'm a good communicator) but I have no idea where to begin. Do I need a degree in it, teaching qualifications etc?

As a visiting lecturer then your industry experience will be good but it wouldn't be full time.

As a full time lecturer they will (probably) want you to be researching and generating research income, though it will depend on the University.

Otherwise try the niche Universities - e.g. Ashridge / Hult International Business School

In my experience the lecturers I learned the most from were those that had "been there and done it"

Marketing is a broad church but I'm two years older than you (running a specialist Marcomms agency). Most of my clients (also in marketing) are around the same age, though a few younger ones as well. So I wouldn't write yourself off just yet. Providing you keep up to date with current trends and best practice, coupled with the experience you have I'd say you have many more years left in the sector yet.

If you are interested in teaching, I'd say the first point of contact should be with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. They run numerous courses across the country and I know of several Marketing Practitioners who did teaching alongside their day-jobs.

If you fancy a bit of overseas work, the British Council are regularly posting opportunities for Marketing type teaching, capacity building and consultancy assignments around the world.

Both of the above many not require any teaching qualification but will require some recognised academic qualification related to the subject (DipM for example).
