I have been in an company for close to 6.5 years now. Had various promotions but recently was offered a promotion whereby the salary offered was very low so I declined. The current role is comfortable and work life balance is good. However there is not much future progression. I do get a small uplift in my salary each year. Overall package is 100k.

Been presented with a new opportunity. Package is 118k. Not entirely sure of future growth opportunities but others at this company have been progressing. The company is smaller than my current company though.

Should I stay or go?!

Interesting decision point!

Is the £18k uplift - once taxed - worthwhile in comparison to your current overall package?

How does your current comfortable and balanced role compare to that uplift?

Are you concerned that having declined the promotion from your current employer, your reputation may be impacted?

Due to salary sacrifice, I will come under the threshold to ensure I am not taxed crazy if I take new offer.

Current role work life balance is brilliant and I do have autonomy. Not sure how new role would work out on these points.

I declined the promotion 6 months ago but my reputation with current employer robust. It is simply that I don't see any progression into higher role with current employer.

I'm not sure how anyone can advise in a useful way. The data point is salary but clearly that's not the only driver here - such as work life balance. That's totally normal, but only you can work out how you weight salary vs work / life balance vs interesting job vs whatever else.

I've had so many people come to me over the years and say.......I have another offer of 20% more and I'm going to leave unless you match it......I reply, that sounds great, well done; I'm sorry but we aren't going to be able to match that, you should take it........they reply, oh, but they insist on 5 days a week in the office and I really like the work/life balance I have here.......

Good points. I am in a position where I am constantly thinking do I stick to a comfortable job or take a risk with a new job.

That notwithstanding, if someone is in this position, then if you've had the thought, "Is this it for the next 40 years of my life?" then it's probably an idea to jump but if and only if (or iff, if you're a mathmo) you've got enough of a financial parachute to take the hit should the next position not be what you thought it was and you end up bailing, and being out of a job for 6-12 months. So it's highly risky if you're comfortable financially and work-wise, but then you may die a little inside everyday.

That's not my advice but just something to consider.

Plan it carefully and weigh up the pros and cons yourself.

Me personally, I'd take the leap but I'm a bit crazy like that. I'd forgo the fast cars and nice house for a more interesting work proposition. You can always buy that st later on or buy a cheaper car that's still fun.

I mean, 20+ years ago, I had the choice of continuing in a dull-as-fk-but-safe job and treat myself to something mid-engined and Italian, or jack it all in and start a business. From the above... and looking at my car history... you can guess what I did. And I fking love my life right now.

Racehorse asks endless questions on the same topic. Almost like it's an entirely imaginary situation for debate generation..(btw, it's hardly "sleuthing" when its about the only thing they discuss.)
