What would people say is good wage in North of England.

And what would that good wage equal to in London wage.

E.g. 50k may be considered good by someone living in Leeds and 50k would be equivalent to around 70k in London due to living costs etc.

I think the "London Weighting" uplift for NHS salaries was 15% (Outer London) and 20% (Inner London).
Good salary anywhere depends on what makes you happy.

Would the NHS uplift be accurate do you think?

I'm not sure I only visit London as a tourist but generally expect my North West £10 to feel like £1

Pick an average prices house in the town of your choosing and work out the mortgage costs. Work out the net salary remaining after mortgage and you'll be pretty close. Transport costs a bit more in London as does going out generally. Council tax likely to be more too.

House prices must be atleast 3x higher in London.

Assuming you can't get a nice one for 200k.

Trying to put a number on the amount you'd have to pay me to live in London and it very quickly goes into fantasy land.

Don’t understand why the OP has started 3 threads about the same thing. There’s no way he or she earns 100k and I doubt they can tie their own shoelaces.

A nice terraced house around some parts of London would be 800k

In some parts of the north west with beautiful country side you would get an impressive five/six bedroomed detached house with a double garage and lovely big gardens front and back.

I'm in Scotland and in easy commuting distance of both Glasgow and Edinburgh. I paid 184k for a 4 bedroom detached with reasonable gardens about 5 years ago and that wouldn't have got me a studio flat in London...

Scottish property prices really give good value against the salaries on offer. I found IT banking roles could pay a premium over Yorkshire salaries (20% more) and yet homes were cheaper than Leeds prices. 20% less. At this that was my finger in the air perception.

Only problem was the weather really.

But I have lived in the city centre twice and also bearsden and was tempted to stay. Things may have changed significantly since Covid though ?

House prices make this difficult. You would expect to get a decent house for a decent salary £50k on the outskirts of Leeds is going to get you into a nice 3/4 bed family home with a chunk of deposit I imagine you will need double this to but the equivalent house anywhere close to London.

I feel like £60k+ is good in Leeds.

Would need to be £100k in London and still not afford you the same quality of life. But obviously your property would earn more than you do.

Household income is a better measure though, in Harrogate £60k household income wouldn’t get you far/detached if the partner was a stay at home for example.

I feel £80k combined salaries would start to give you good options if you have little deposit or equity

All depends what standard of living you define as "good". I'm in Nottinghamshire so not really north, but it's north midlands and living costs are similar to the north. £50k is a solid but not stellar wage for these parts.

You'd need a lot more than £70k to have an equivalent lifestyle in London though. You can still get a 3-bed detached house (reasonably new) from £180k in some parts of Notts/Derbys if you're not too fussed about area, and even the better areas aren't silly money by SE standards.

My brother has just last week bought a lovely stone built large three bedroomed detached bungalow, with garage and a massive turfed flat back garden for £260,000 on the Scottish borders.

Around Manchester it would be £500,000,

The North is quite a big place. Lots of it is very cheap and lots of it is not at all cheap. I think some southerns (I would class myself as one) would be surprised how expensive some places outside the southeast are to buy a house.

I can work it out for me, living in a small town in Surrey, compared to my parents in a nicer village near Stockport.

I'd have a comparable life if my salary dropped at 35%.

I’m from Leeds, live abroad now but my employer has a manufacturing base in Glasgow and I’ve looked at it before. Usually on a visit when the sun is shining hehe.

Wages seemed decent for the effort involved, but house prices were much lower than I’d expected.

I do like Glasgow. If my employer hadn’t royally fked everyone I know who works there then maybe I’d still be looking.

I’m curious how does your lifestyle compare in Dubai. I have a couple of work-friends who had worked there or from there. One is trying to move back and I had put him in touch with my employer as they had adverts internally.

When I asked if he would move to start his family there on his current wages. He said 110%.

Asked how many maids and au pair he would have (I was joking) he said he’d definitely have some help. I can’t really imagine how life would measure up.

I just picked up on the negatives too much when they told stories in the past (around 2009 when cars were abandoned by expats fleeing their debts). It sounded too hot for my liking.

Idea of no tax appealed mind.

Pretty much. Obviously that doesn't mean you can afford any property in any location.
