i see many adverts for RAF reserves these days and a slightly interested but would like to know if
1) being in the reserves will be ab blocker with my employer as i think i need to commint 2 weeks every with the RAF, also what happens if there is a deployment abroad is the employer obliged to release me for that period?
2) I work in IT software qa hence what could be the possible roles for it
3) also im v close to the upper age limit so wonder if that can be a blocker
4) do they have rigorous physical tests for all roles? ( i do have a slight issue with my knee where i had damaged the cartilage a bit and need a minor op)
5) how is the working condition and the camaraderie inside usually (with the odd exceptions)?

if anyone has been or in the RAF reserve I would love to hear your views

I’m a regular in the RAF who works on a Reserve Sqn. I’ll have a go at answering your 5 questions.

1. Your commitment will be a minimum of 27 days per year, of which 15 will be continuous Annual Continuous Training. Some Sqns allow you to split this up into chunks, most don’t.

2. Do you really want to join the Reserve doing what you do Monday to Friday? In my experience, a majority of the Reserves on my Sqn’s civilian jobs are a million miles away from what they do on the Sqn.

3. You must Attest (be sworn in) by your 55th birthday. We have had people join at 54 years and 11 months. As long as you are 18 or over and haven’t yet reached your 55th birthday you are able to join.

4. The entry fitness test is the same for all trades. When you are in, some have additional fitness requirements (RAF Regiment).

5.Conditions are generally good. Accommodation can sometimes be a bit hit and miss, but are adequate for the time you will spend in it.

If you haven’t had a chance, have a look at the link below.

Don’t bother, get treated worse than prisoners, pay is terrible & mostly run by incompetent self important morons.

The 1% of fun really isn’t worth the 99% of dirge. (Ex RAF 12 years)
