It'll be your payroll company complying with their obligations under Anti-money-laundering regs, I doubt you'll get anything from HMRC about it other than it's up to your Payroll Company how they comply with the rules. But it's not possible to comply without proof of address.

It should be your 'place of residence' - defined by what address is shown on your electoral role. If you use a different address, you can expect some unwelcome enquiry should the matter be flagged up. I believe that it may even be illegal to provide an address to HMRC other than that in which you live.

I might be wrong on the illegality - unless the address was given for deliberate nefarious intent. But you certainly need to tell HMRC where you live.

What's the problem here, why don't you just do what the payroll company asks?

And the stuff about using a different house just sounds like you're being awkward / evasive.

Companies are very concerned about compliance now - they'd rather not deal with someone than take any chances.
