Career change from Underwriting
Discussion
Long story short I've been a commercial underwriter for a number of years but now looking to move into something else that would be a good fit for my skills and experience.
A lot of people move into the broker side of things but looking to move out of insurance completely.
Has anyone done something similar? I'm looking to tap into the hive mind.

Well I guess this depends on your skills & experience and what sort of career you want to move into.
Insurance companies have lots of "non insurance" departments e.g. Finance, Marketing, Communications etc - a role in one of these these would give you a route into other industries.
Another avenue to consider is consulting, perhaps find a role in the Insurance team in a consultancy then, over time, move into consulting for other industries and then perhaps find a non consulting role in one of these industries.
Many years ago I was an insurance broker and now I do something completely different so these moves are possible.

As above, I've got a friend who used to do underwriting but ended up progressing to a different role but still in insurance. He travelled the UK and did training for a while then went on to become an account manager (not sure of his title but he looks after fairly large commercial policies.) His job is very different, more of a sales type role now but utilizing his knowledge of the industry and processes.
Sounds like you want out of the insurance game altogether though. Wondering if you are able to move to different role altogether within insurance until you build up some knowledge\experience and then move to a different industry doing that role?

Loss Adjusting?
I know you said you want out of insurance but adjusting will be quite different but would still use your skills though in a very different way.
I'm a surveyor and work quite regularly with Loss Adjusters and their work always seems to be very interesting and, certainly, quite varied

Why do you want to move on? What are the drivers? A lot of people move into the broker side of things but looking to move out of insurance completely.

I'm in Insurance myself and a while ago I was very bored and frustrated with my role I volunteered with the CII locally partly to Network and partly to challenge myself and learn new skills. I really Enjoyed on the whole and ended up leading that group really successfully. Really boosted my confidence at a tough time in my career. Was a fair bit of fun at times too.
I'm in Relationship Management rather than UW (did a number of years on the UW side myself) and recently changed roles internally from different product lines. It's been a brilliant change and given me a massive spring in my step. In fact, I've had absolutely an absolutely glowing end of year review.
The old adage of a change is as good as a rest is very true in my opinion.
Drop Me a PM if you want to discuss anything mate.
