After over 20 years i've decided to leave my current employer and seek alternative employment. My current employer is in a dispute with our union over t&c's and pay and have been for 6 months now. Eventually they will come to agreement i'm sure but not before i leave which leads on to my question. Assuming they agree a pay rise back dated to April would my (hopefully former by then) employer have to pay me the back dated raise from April until my leave date?

Whatever the answer to this question will not change my plans i'm just curious

We always do the above but only if asked to backdate

IME it varies from firm to firm.

Some always pay leavers, some pay leavers only if asked others don't pay leavers at all. Your Union or your HR team will know what custom and practice at your place is.

What's your notice period? I'd maybe hang on if you can as they may well use that as an excuse not to pay.

My notice period is only a week but I've told them I will give 2 as a courtesy seeing as it takes at least 3 weeks to train someone for my role. As I said I'm not that worried as it will be a minimal amount and I'd rather not lose the opportunities I'm being interviewed for this week for the sake of a few quid and as they've been in dispute since April I don't hold out any hope of a resolution before December.

Get your current Union rep to ask that any back dated deal will include pay for any qualified former employees as well as the current ones.

I'll ask him, don't know why I didn't think of this to be honest. Thanks

I'm in the same position,(possibly even the same employer) as the OP. I've just left Royal Mail where ( as some people might have heard) management have been in dispute with the union since last April.
I'm quite happy with the package I received from them, but my manager mentioned in my exit interview that if a settlement was reached in the near future, I may be entitled to a backdated payrise up to my leaving date and furthermore, as my package was based on a percentage of salary, this may be increased too. I'm not holding up much hope, but it would be a nice wee bonus if it happens.
