I saw this earlier on Facebook, I was suprised to see the relatively low entry criteria to be honest. £30k starting salary.

Many security service roles weight soft-skills beyond outright academic achievement.

As to the job in question, this may explain the context:

As someone who struggled to get a Grade-C at GCSE French (and indeed English) then a B in A-level language seems a pretty high bar if you don't have the 'ear' for languages.

Interesting role.

I wonder how my wife would get on applying. She speaks some mandarin but is fluent in Cantonese, Bahasa, English and a regional Bahasa dialect. Doesn’t have a degree but has an amazing ear for languages! I wonder which is more important.

I would suggest it is worth a try.
A degree demonstrates your ability to learn but your wife can demonstrate the same by her ability to have learnt other languages.

My Wife speaks fluent English, Mandarin & Cantonese and has an understanding of Hu and Russian.

She absolutely aced all of the tests, but never heard a pip back from them. I don’t think they are a desperate as they’re making out.

If by any chance she's not a UK national from birth then there's a chance she wouldn't meet the minimum security requirements.
