I seem to have found myself with a bit of spare time at the moment (mainly as I cant seem to find a new contract for love nor money at the moment)!

The local college is offering a free part time L2 Electrical Diploma which I was considering applying for. Despite working bin an office for most of my career, I am VERY handy when it comes to DIY, working with my hands; and have done a fair amount of electrical work on my various homes over the years.

I honestly dont know what I am thinking about doing the course, other than its manageable hours and might be a skill I can fall back on at some point?

The L2 diploma would at least mean I am fully qualified.

Just interested in peoples views / experiences of taking similar courses. I am 43 BTW (classic mid life crisis territory)

Thanks

Does a L2 qualification now make you a qualified electrician? When I was looking at this ISTR L2 was the entry level and you then go on to L3 NVQ and an AM assessment for a full ticket..... Might have changed over the years though!

If you have free time and the offer of a free qualification in an area where you have an interest and some practical experience I say go for it.

I am a little unsure. Its all pretty poorly explained. I have seen stuff that states L3 is for Commercial / 3 Phase. L2 is for Domestic Installations. But I have also seen stuff that states L3 is fully qualified and L2 is only part qualified.

To be qualified/approved you need to be NVQ 3.

I’ve been employing sparks for 10 years and to be honest even the NVQ means very little these days

I’ve no idea what the level 2 means as the last time I was at college was 25 years ago. I did a city and guilds 236 electrical installation, although only managed part 1 before moving in to employment so I was in no way qualified. The course was great, interesting and very hands on, assuming the level 2 is similar, you sound like you will get a lot out of it.

I’d say if you have the time and are interested in it, go for it.
